Job Description

Palliative Care Volunteer - Dr. L.A. Miller Centre Site

The Palliative Care unit at the Dr. L.A. Miller Centre, located at 100 Forest Road in St. John's, is the inpatient division of the larger Eastern Health Palliative Care Program. Volunteers in this area are part of the team of carers (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc.) who interact with not only patients with serious, life-challenging illnesses but also with those patients who require end-of-life care. Volunteers are the friendly, compassionate face of healthcare to patients and their family members at these most challenging times.

The Miller Centre is seeking volunteers, 18 years of age or older, to be part of this team.

Volunteer opportunities are offered each morning, afternoon and evening and begin at mealtime(s).

In addition to the standard volunteer onboarding process, applicants for this position will be interviewed by the volunteer liaison for Palliative Care. Orientation, followed by training and mentoring, will take place on the nursing unit. All volunteers must attend these sessions prior to beginning their volunteer assignment.

Volunteer attributes specific to this role include:

- Ability to listen and journey with the patient and their family while supporting them in their time of need
- Willingness and ability to work independently and as a team player
- Willingness and ability to follow directions and consult when necessary
- Self-motivated and confident personality
- Confident and respectful interaction with patients, family members and staff

Please visit our volunteer website (volunteer.easternhealth.ca) for details about the processes involved with becoming an Eastern Health volunteer.
