Department Chief Family Medicine
Part-Time Term Position: 3 years
Regional: Location to be determined (CNRHC/ JPMRHC)

Definition of work:
Reporting to the Vice President Medical Services/ Chief of Staff (VP/COS), the Department Chief Family Medicine is responsible for the effective organization, management, and functioning of the Medical Staff within the Family Medicine Department while providing leadership to ensure integration of the clinical and operational standards, quality improvement initiatives and academic activities of the regional family medicine department. In accordance with the Medical Staff Bylaws the Department Chief Family Medicine provides support to the VP/COS in matters relating to appointments, credentials, privileges and management of remediation and discipline.

In this progressive leadership role, the Department Chief Family Medicine aligns with Central Health's values, mission, vision, strategic, and financial plans, and is committed to working collaboratively with the four Deputy Chiefs within the Family Medicine Department Physician Leadership structure (Deputy Chief Inpatient Medicine; Deputy Chief Family Medicine Obstetrics; Deputy Chief Category B Emergency Medicine; Deputy Chief Long Term Care/ Palliative Care/ Care of the Elderly), and Administrative staff to build effective leadership partnerships. The Department Chief Family Medicine actively participates on the Medical Advisory Committee and other department, program or Central Health Committees as required.

The Department Chief Family Medicine will have superior communication and engagement skills with the ability to build and maintain effective collaborative working relationships and to coach and develop others. With demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and to a diverse and culturally competent work environment, the Department Chief Family Medicine will build trust, manage conflict and inspire people to pursue quality, safety and innovation in all aspects of their work.

Key Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

* Leadership and management of Department including; human resource planning; physician performance; financial and program planning

* Conduct regular Department meetings

* Provide advice and recommendations to the Medical Advisory Committee

* Advocating for evidence-based medical practice; reviewing clinical concerns and physician practice concerns; examining or reviewing charts when appropriate; intervening, assuming or delegating care when warranted

* Review professional performance, ethics and conduct

* Privileging, appointment and reappointment, remediation and discipline of Medical Staff, and cooperating/ assisting legal counsel in such processes

* Develop, implement, maintain and evaluate/revise Department call schedules; priorities and objectives; Medical Staff rules; policies and procedures; and operational plans

* Leadership for recruitment, orientation and retention within the Department

* Resolve disputes within the department and across clinical areas, sectors and disciplines

* Encourage, promote and foster participation in continuing professional development, and ensure professional development meets required standards

* Medical Staff resource planning aligning with regional priorities and operational plans

* Establish a Department Quality Improvement management program

* Develop, establish and maintain and report on quality of care

The successful candidate must demonstrate an awareness of and be responsible for promoting and supporting person-and family-centered care, demonstrate a commitment to safety and partner with all team members to improve worker and patient safety by integrating safety into work practices, identifying risks and implementing improvements.

Required qualifications:
* Current registration and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador
* Royal College, of College of Family Physicians, certification is an asset, but not required
* Satisfy credentialing requirements of Central Health
* Formal physician leadership training and/or equivalent experience
* Complete education in quality and patient safety as required
* A satisfactory record of work performance and attendance is required for this position
