Resource Planning and Budgeting - Office of Institutional Analysis

The Office of Institutional Analysis (OIA) is a division of the Resource Planning and Budgeting (RPB) team. OIA is a university-wide unit tasked with providing analytical resources for institutional information/ research in support of planning, decision making and the advancement of the University of New Brunswick. UNB has a large amount of data that OIA converts into usable information and then interprets to help meet the university's reporting and planning needs. OIA engages university partners to address data quality issues as well as data collection process improvements. A key objective of OIA is to centralize and optimize information quality, integrity, consistency, and production efficiency.

Salary Range: $53,615 - $69,702 per annum

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to Associate Director, RPB (Institutional Analysis), the Data Scientist will be dedicated to OIA's data infrastructure renewal and will be integral in accelerating the development of our shared data visualization tools. This position will also be responsible for providing technical guidance for the development of predictive models. The Data Scientist will collaborate closely with team members and frequently consult with UNB's Information Technology Services (ITS) team. The Data Scientist will ask questions of data to determine what critical factors could be influencing institutional outcomes.

  • Improve and maintain OIA technical infrastructure while developing rich data visualizations.
  • Gather data, prepare reports, and analyze data and statistics.
  • Build predictive models to help UNB forecast items such as enrollment.
  • Support the university's student success and strategic enrollment initiatives while enabling an environment that facilitates data-based decision-making.
  • Develop data visualizations and reports to fulfill recurring data needs.
  • Create and present dynamic reports and data sets to support timely decision-making.
  • Build predictive models using computer programing languages.
  • Build and maintain relational databases (SQL).
  • Produce interactive tables, graphs, dashboards, and narrative analysis of data to easily display and summarize university data.
  • Manage the development of visualizations and models assigned by the Associate Director.
  • Coordinate work items with university partners and report on the status to the unit leader and other university stakeholders.
  • Act as a technical advisor to the Associate Director to ensure that items are developed within compliance with best practices.
  • Work closely with ITS to ensure all items adhere to UNB's IT policies.
  • Perform business analysis to understand information needs and requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • A University Degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Data analysis, or a related field.
  • Three to five (3-5) years of related experience.
  • Equivalent education and experience will be considered.

Additional Strengths:

  • Three to five (3-5) years of professional experience with data modelling, data analysis and forecasting is considered a strong asset.
  • Expertise with R Programming, Python, SPSS, MySQL, Tableau and other programming languages is required.
  • Knowledge of research and analytical methods, both qualitative and quantitative.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
