GEMTEC currently has an opening for a Senior Hydrogeologist in our Mount Pearl, NL office location, as well as other offices in the Atlantic being an option. The position provides the opportunity to support and grow the existing Environmental Science team within Newfoundland and Labrador and across the company. You will work with a team of hydrogeologists, engineers, and environmental scientists on a variety of hydrogeological and environmental projects in support of mine development, infrastructure and land development, as well as contaminated sites assessment and management.


  • Prepare and review proposals, develop work plans and budgets and manage projects.
  • Oversee the execution of project scope, budget, and schedule to meet client's expectations and ensure quality standards on project deliverables.
  • Provide technical guidance related to field investigations including: drilling and logging; soil and bedrock characterization; monitoring well installation; hydraulic response testing; soil, groundwater, sediment and surface water sampling; installation of groundwater instrumentation, etc.
  • Complying with Health and Safety protocols and supporting GEMTEC's strong safety culture
  • Manage and lead the preparation of technical reports including: hydrogeology characterization assessments, impact assessments, groundwater supply studies, environmental site assessments, remediation, mine pit and construction dewatering assessments, and groundwater and surface water monitoring reports.
  • Supervise and mentor junior and intermediate staff.
  • Foster and maintain long-term client relationships and participate in business development activities to grow the business.


  • A bachelor's degree in earth science, or geological/geotechnical/civil engineering with an emphasis in hydrogeology. A post-graduate degree is preferred.
  • Registered, or the ability to be registered, as a member with the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (P.Eng., P.Geo.). Registrations in other provinces (NS, NB, ON) would be an asset, and may be required for the projects. (Registration costs covered by GEMTEC).
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in a hydrogeology consultancy role, with progressively more senior experience.
  • Proven strong project management skills (e.g., development of work plans, budgets, schedules, project controls) delivered with a focus on client needs.
  • Demonstrated work experience with field-based investigations in physical hydrogeology, chemical hydrogeology, groundwater supply and/or hydrogeological assessments.
  • Sound working knowledge of geological / hydrogeological field methods: soil and rock sampling and geotechnical soil and core logging, drilling, test pitting, well installations, water quality sampling and hydraulic response tests (e.g., slug, pumping tests, and packer testing).
  • Proficiency in various hydrogeological analysis and modeling software (for example AQTESOLV, Surfer, MODFLOW and FEFLOW) will be an asset.
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, gINT and GIS software.
  • Familiarity with provincial and federal regulatory frameworks for groundwater withdrawal/use, drinking water supply, contaminated sites assessment and management, and environmental assessment.
  • Strong leadership and business development skills, and analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communication skills: verbal, technical writing, electronic communications, and presentations.
  • Solid planning, organizational and time management abilities
  • Good interpersonal skills combined with a positive, team-oriented attitude.
  • Good safety awareness
  • Willingness to travel to various locations including remote project sites within Canada.
