Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department Fire Chief

The Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department (KVFD) is inviting applications for the position of Fire Chief.

The KVFD is a Regional Service which provides coverage to approximately 31,000 (2016) residents in Quispamsis and Rothesay. The two towns are located along the beautiful Kennebecasis and Hammond Rivers and neighbour the City of Saint John. Operating out of two fire stations, the KVFD provides fire suppression, vehicle, off-road, ice and water rescue and response to medical emergencies with Ambulance New Brunswick. The department also has an active fire prevention division that conducts fire code inspections, provides fire and life safety educational programs, and a child car seat installation program.


Reporting to the Joint Board of Fire Commissioners, the fire chief is a senior management position responsible for providing overall leadership, administration and strategic direction for all aspects of the fire department including short and long-term planning, daily operations and its' physical, financial and human resources on behalf of the Fire Board. The Fire Chief is also appointed the KV EMO director on behalf of both Towns.


The successful incumbent will:

  • Possess exceptional leadership, judgment and interpersonal skills.
  • Have demonstrated experience in enhancing service delivery.
  • Proven ability to develop effective working relationships with labour groups, elected officials, employees and external stakeholders.
  • Extensive experience in labour relations, including negotiating and administering collective agreements.
  • Demonstrated ability in coordinating and commanding emergency incidents.


  • Bachelor's Degree or post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Formal training in Fire Service Leadership with a preference to Fire Service Administration.
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer Professional Qualifications (Level IV) Certificate or equivalent.
  • ICS Certification.
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standards Certifications.


  • At least 15 years of progressive experience in the fire service with a minimum 2 years in a senior management role.
