The City of Moncton is currently accepting applications for the position of Utility 6 - Zookeeper/Veterinary Technician - Casual with the Magnetic Hill Zoo. This position reports directly to Zoo Animal Care Foreman.



· Graduated from Grade 12 or equivalent.

· Successfully graduated from an accredited Animal Health Technician/Technology, Veterinary Technician/Technology Program and has written and passed the Veterinary Technician National Exam


· Minimum of two (2) years' experience with exotic animals in a zoo setting, vet clinic or a related field.

· Experience with and be comfortable around animals


· The work requires direct interaction with the public in both official languages. If the successful candidate is not proficient in spoken French, they will be encouraged to work towards obtaining Level 2+ spoken French, and they may be required, on occasion, to participate in language training provided by the employer.


· Familiar with the technical aspects of exotic and agricultural animal and veterinary care including knowledge of the biology, reproductive habits, physiology, nutrition, pathology and common parasites and diseases of all groups of vertebrates.

· Knowledgeable in-patient care which includes vaccinations, treatment plan, sample collection, special intensive nursing care, and fluid therapy.

· Knowledge of techniques aspects of slide preparations and other medical treatments.

· Good general knowledge of all emergency and safety procedures necessary to work with exotic and agricultural animals.

· Must be able to meet the public and react to their requests with discretion and tact and to communicate effectively with them. i.e. "Meet the Keeper" presentations.

· Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other industry software.

· Ability to follow instruction and fill out daily reports, logs and work orders.


· Must be current and continue to be a member in good standing with the provincial association

· Valid minimum Class 5 driver's license

· Must have or be willing and capable of obtaining and maintaining the following qualifications: WHMIS & First Aid / CPR.

· Must have a firearms license or must obtain said license within the trial period outlined in article 12.01 (F).


· Hours of work shall be according to article 23.01 (B) variable shifts and the employee will be required to workdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

· Follow and respect goals and plans of biomedical training and enrichment

· Detects deviations in animal's normal physical or psychological behavior.

· Work requires physical effort and sufficient strength and stamina to do heavy manual labour outdoors in all types of weather. There may be exposure to several disagreeable conditions. Occasional Hazards would be considered as moderate.

· Maintains daily reports and records.

· Zookeeping duties as required (Care for animals, clean-up duties of enclosures, food preparation)

· Supervises small crews as required (may include training).

· This position requires a high level of attention to detail and could become stressful at times.
