Senior Mechanical Designer

Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Industry: Building Consulting Engineering

About the Opportunity

An established building consulting engineering firm in Edmonton is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to provide technical leadership across its building engineering projects.

This is an opportunity for an experienced professional who can take a project from design concept through detailed development, coordinate complex mechanical systems, and serve as a trusted technical resource for the broader project team.

Rather than focusing primarily on producing drawings, you'll help establish design approaches, review technical deliverables, resolve challenging coordination issues, and ensure mechanical systems are practical, efficient, and aligned with project requirements. You'll also play an important role in supporting junior designers and helping maintain the technical quality of the team's work.

The firm works across a diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, residential, and healthcare projects, offering the opportunity to apply your experience to a range of building types while contributing to project delivery and team development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design development for complex building projects, including HVAC, heating, cooling, ventilation, and plumbing systems.

  • Establish system design approaches and evaluate technical solutions based on performance, constructability, budget, and project requirements.

  • Review and provide technical direction on mechanical layouts, calculations, equipment selections, specifications, and construction documentation.

  • Resolve complex design challenges and coordinate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, electrical, and other disciplines.

  • Oversee the quality and consistency of mechanical design deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and design reviews for junior and intermediate designers.

  • Collaborate with project managers and engineers on design decisions, project planning, resource requirements, and delivery schedules.

  • Act as a technical point of contact during project coordination and contribute to discussions with clients, architects, contractors, and consultants.

  • Provide input during construction, including reviewing shop drawings, addressing design discrepancies, responding to technical inquiries, and supporting site reviews.

  • Identify design risks, coordination challenges, and opportunities to improve project outcomes before they affect delivery.

  • Contribute to the development of internal design standards, quality-control practices, and team processes.

  • Support the ongoing development of the mechanical group through knowledge sharing and technical collaboration.

What We're Looking For

  • Extensive experience in mechanical building design, ideally within a consulting engineering environment.

  • Strong technical expertise in HVAC and plumbing systems across a variety of building types.

  • Advanced knowledge of mechanical design principles, system selection, building codes, and relevant industry standards.

  • Strong proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD, including the ability to review and guide design documentation.

  • Demonstrated experience leading complex design assignments and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Confidence in reviewing technical work, identifying design risks, and resolving challenging project issues.

  • Experience mentoring other designers and supporting technical development within a team.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain design decisions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Relevant mechanical engineering or engineering technology education, or equivalent industry experience.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Technical influence: Help shape mechanical design strategies and guide important engineering decisions across projects.

  • Leadership without being limited to drafting: Combine hands-on technical expertise with design reviews, mentorship, and oversight of project deliverables.

  • Complex project exposure: Apply your experience to a diverse portfolio of building projects with varying technical requirements.

  • Greater project involvement: Work closely with project leadership and other disciplines to resolve challenges and influence project outcomes.

  • Mentorship and team development: Help strengthen the mechanical team's capabilities by sharing knowledge and supporting less experienced professionals.

  • Opportunity to make an impact: Contribute to design quality, project delivery standards, and the continued development of an established consulting practice.

This role is ideal for a senior mechanical design professional who enjoys solving complex technical problems, guiding others, and having a meaningful influence on how projects are designed and delivered.
