Senior Backend Developer

As a Senior Backend Developer you will own the services that clients trust in production—turning complex requirements into reliable, high-performance systems that our teams and customers depend on every day. Your work directly shapes delivery quality, client outcomes, and HTG's reputation as a design-services partner that leads in innovation.

• Design, build, and ship production-grade backend services that meet agreed SLAs for latency, availability, and throughput within the first 90 days.
• Lead end-to-end delivery of at least two client features or integrations per quarter, from design through deployment and production support.
• Reduce critical production incidents by 30% within six months through better observability, testing, and incident response.
• Mentor two or more developers so they independently own services and pass code and design reviews to senior standard.
• Drive measurable improvements in CI/CD and test coverage so that release cycle time drops without sacrificing quality.
• Collaborate with architects, QA, and client stakeholders to translate requirements into maintainable APIs and data models that scale.

You will report to a technical lead or delivery manager on client-facing and internal product teams. You will work with modern stacks (Java/J2EE, C++, cloud services, APIs, databases), Jira, and AI-enabled tools, alongside DevOps, QA, and architects. Engagements are typically Ottawa-based or hybrid with Canadian clients in telecom, high-tech, and software. HTG provides the autonomy of a 51–200 person services firm plus the technical depth of world-class engineering partners.

• Demonstrated success designing and operating backend systems in production (APIs, services, data stores) with measurable reliability and performance outcomes.
• Hands-on experience with at least one of Java/J2EE, C++, or equivalent enterprise backend stacks, plus SQL and cloud or on-prem deployment.
• Proven ability to own SDLC stages: design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Track record of mentoring others and raising code quality through reviews and standards.
• Strong troubleshooting and communication skills in a consulting or multi-stakeholder environment.
• Legal authorization to work in Canada; ability to submit resume in Microsoft Word format.
