Digital Architect

The Alberta Public Service builds a stronger province for current and future generations. As Digital Architect you will shape the enterprise architecture that lets Albertans access secure, reliable digital services when and where they need them—turning policy into platforms that work at provincial scale.

Performance Objectives
  • Define and publish enterprise digital architecture standards (integration, data, security, cloud) that ministries adopt for at least three major service transformations within 12 months.
  • Lead architecture reviews for high-impact initiatives so that 90% of reviewed designs meet GOA security, privacy, and accessibility requirements on first pass.
  • Reduce duplication of citizen-facing digital channels by mapping current-state architecture and delivering a prioritized target-state roadmap within six months.
  • Establish reusable reference architectures and patterns that cut average time-to-production for new digital services by 25% over 18 months.
  • Advise executive and ministry teams on architecture trade-offs so that investment decisions are evidence-based and fiscally responsible.
  • Mentor solution architects and technical leads across ministries, building a consistent architecture community of practice.
Environment & Resources

You report to the Director, Digital Architecture (or equivalent enterprise technology lead) within a central digital / information-management function serving all ministries. You work with cross-ministry architects, cybersecurity, privacy, and program teams; you have access to enterprise tools, cloud platforms, and architecture governance forums. Location is Edmonton; hours follow the standard 36.25-hour APS week.

Essential Qualifications
  • Demonstrated success designing and governing enterprise or large-scale public-sector digital architectures that improved service delivery or reduced technical debt.
  • Proven ability to produce architecture artifacts (principles, patterns, roadmaps, reviews) that non-technical executives can use for decisions.
  • Experience applying security, privacy, and accessibility requirements in architecture for citizen-facing systems.
  • University degree in computer science, information systems, or related field plus substantial architecture experience (or equivalent combination).
  • Strong consultation and influence skills across diverse stakeholders, including policy, program, and IT teams.
Role Selling Points
  • Direct impact on services used by millions of Albertans.
  • Public Service Pension Plan, comprehensive benefits, and professional development.
  • Work that balances innovation with public accountability and fiscal stewardship.
  • Opportunity to set province-wide digital standards in a large, complex government environment.
