Prosperity Workforce Solutions is recruiting on behalf of a respected mental health organization dedicated to providing specialized, evidence-informed care to children and families. The Mental Health Nurse will join an interdisciplinary team providing nursing assessment, care planning, medication support, health education and ongoing clinical support to children and their families.

Reporting to the Program Manager/ Program Supervisor, the Mental Health Nurse works collaboratively across clinical programs and settings to assess patients, develop and evaluate nursing care plans, provide medication education and support, and promote continuity of care. The successful candidate will bring strong pediatric experience, sound clinical judgment and the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

This is an opportunity for an experienced pediatric nurse to contribute to children's mental health services while supporting patients and families through assessment, education, care coordination and evidence-informed nursing practice.

Location: Red Deer, Alberta, with travel between organizational sites as required
Status: Permanent

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Service Delivery

  • Complete comprehensive physical and psychosocial nursing assessments to identify mental health concerns, current risks and relevant health needs
  • Review laboratory and diagnostic findings, specialist reports and medical history as part of the assessment process
  • Complete medication reconciliation and monitor physiological parameters and medication side effects
  • Develop appropriate short- and long-term goals and provide nursing interventions to promote, maintain and restore health
  • Monitor, evaluate and modify nursing care plans based on patient response, changes in condition and the effectiveness of interventions
  • Provide patients and families with information and education regarding clinical conditions, ongoing care and health management
  • Provide relevant medication education and support
  • Assist with individual and group therapy as appropriate
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic health record
  • Liaise with physicians and other healthcare professionals to promote continuity of care
  • Support families in connecting with primary care providers and other community resources
  • Provide nursing support across multiple teams, programs and clinical settings
  • Communicate relevant patient, service and workplace issues to leadership

Staff Development & Education

  • Act as a clinical resource and provide education and training to team members
  • Participate regularly and constructively in clinical and program team meetings
  • Provide preceptorship and support to students and interns as assigned
  • Maintain ongoing professional development and participate in continuous learning opportunities

Program Planning & Development

  • Identify opportunities to improve service delivery through evidence-informed practice
  • Work collaboratively with clinical teams and leadership to implement improvements to clinical processes
  • Participate in the development of children's mental health education and resource materials
  • Contribute to program planning and development initiatives across services

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta
  • Minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric nursing experience in an ambulatory care setting
  • Experience providing care and support to children experiencing mental health concerns
  • Ability to maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification and physically perform the interventions associated with the training
  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills
  • Experience working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary mental health environment
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize competing demands and adapt to changing or unexpected situations

Considered Assets:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or a related discipline
  • Acute care experience in children's mental health
  • Knowledge or experience in family therapy and/or group therapy
  • Experience providing mental health education or psychoeducation
  • Experience working within school-based mental health programming
  • Experience supporting quality improvement, program development or evaluation initiatives

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of pediatric mental health and an appreciation for interdisciplinary approaches to care
  • Ability to apply theoretical and research-based knowledge to clinical nursing practice
  • Strong clinical judgment and analytical skills
  • Ability to identify barriers and develop practical solutions
  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to prioritize work and manage responsibilities across multiple programs and services
  • Demonstrated ability to make evidence-based clinical decisions
  • Strong understanding of confidentiality, privacy legislation and professional nursing standards
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records and clinical information systems
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships and communicate respectfully with patients, families, colleagues and external partners
  • Commitment to quality improvement and continuous professional development
  • Flexibility and adaptability when responding to changing patient, program and organizational needs

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta
  • Maintenance of Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification
  • Ability to physically perform interventions learned through TCI training
  • Ability and willingness to travel between organizational sites as required
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 10 pounds
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods
  • Adequate vision and hearing to interact effectively with patients and team members
  • Manual dexterity required for computer-based work
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and complying with applicable privacy requirements
