The Opportunity

The Buyer Planner is responsible for planning, purchasing, and expediting materials required to support manufacturing operations and customer projects. This role ensures that materials, components, and services are procured at the right cost, quality, and delivery schedule while maintaining appropriate inventory levels. The Buyer Planner works closely with suppliers, engineering, production, project management, and logistics teams to support on-time project execution and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Materials Planning
    • Develop material requirements based on production schedules and forecasts.
    • Manage MRP, Min/Max, safety stock levels, and inventory replenishment strategies to ensure material availability while minimizing excess inventory.
    • Review MRP recommendations, shortages, reschedule notices, and action reports.
    • Maintain planning parameters including lead times, MOQs, lot sizes, safety stock levels, ROPs, etc.
  • Purchasing
    • Source and purchase production materials, components, fabricated parts, and services.
    • Negotiate pricing, lead times, and delivery schedules with suppliers.
    • Issue and maintain purchase orders in the ERP system.
    • Monitor supplier performance related to quality, delivery, and responsiveness.
    • Resolve supplier-related issues involving quality, delivery, and payment.
    • Manage supplier performance and conduct regular reviews.
  • Production Support
    • Review production schedules and project requirements to ensure material availability.
    • Support new project launches by securing required materials and services.
    • Communicate and provide solutions to material shortages and risks.
  • Reporting
    • Prepare periodical reports on inventory, supplier performance, open orders, and purchasing metrics.
    • Support audit requirements and company purchasing procedures.
    • Ensure compliance with company policies and quality standards.
    • Act as a backup for other Buyers and Production Schedulers.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Education & Experience
    • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Operations Management, Business, or a related field.
    • APICS/ASCM CPIM, CSCP, or PMAC certification is considered an asset.
    • 5 - 7 years of direct experience in purchasing, materials planning, supply chain, or manufacturing.
    • In-depth understanding of MRP, ERP systems, and purchasing processes, including demand and supply planning, forecasting, and safety stock calculations.
    • Ability to read and interpret Bills of Materials (BOMs), engineering drawings, and specifications.
    • Experience working in a machine building, automation, industrial equipment, or manufacturing environment preferred.
    • Strong Microsoft Excel skills including VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, and data analysis.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
    • Effective negotiation and supplier management skills.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
    • Detail-oriented with a high degree of accuracy.
    • Team player capable of working cross-functionally with engineering, production, and project teams.
