Role summary: The Senior Electrical Project Manager leads a portfolio of BFG's electrical projects from award through close-out: on time, on margin, and without injury. The role directs foremen and field crews on assigned projects, shares oversight of the in-office project coordinators, and is BFG's senior point of contact for customers and general contractors on that work.

Key responsibilities

1. Project and Portfolio Delivery

  • Lead a portfolio of electrical projects from award through close-out, including new builds, renovations, retrofits and national multi-site rollout programs in retail and commercial environments.

  • Direct foremen and site employees: set priorities, sequence the work, and resolve technical, scope and drawing questions raised from site.

  • Build and maintain project schedules and manpower plans. Forecast labour demand across the portfolio and work with Electrical Services leadership and senior foremen on crew allocation.

  • Plan and manage work in occupied, operating stores, including after-hours work, shutdowns and cutovers.

  • Visit sites regularly for kickoffs, progress reviews, problem-solving and close-out, and travel to other regions as projects require.

2. Customer, General Contractor and Cross-Department Coordination

  • Act as BFG's senior point of contact for customers, general contractors, consultants and other trades on assigned projects, and as the escalation point on delivery issues.

  • Coordinate hybrid projects with the IT department: agree scope boundaries between electrical and IT, maintain one integrated schedule, and present a single BFG position to the customer.

  • Run site and coordination meetings. Manage RFIs, submittals, shop drawings and site instructions through to resolution.

  • Contribute to customer reviews and reporting with accurate project status, risks and forecasts.

3. Budgeting, Costing and Profitability

  • Establish the baseline budget for each project at award and confirm it reflects the estimate, scope and schedule.

  • Report profitability metrics to Electrical Services leadership and Finance, including gross margin, labour productivity against estimate, change recovery and unbilled work.

  • Create monthly suggested billing with supporting backup, including progress draws, approved changes, holdback and final billing. Support collection on disputed or aged items.

  • Identify, price, negotiate and track changes and extras.

4. Procurement and Material

  • Release base package orders, including lighting and distribution packages, in line with project schedules and manufacturer lead times. Manage long-lead items and substitutions.

  • Work with Procurement and the warehouse teams on staging, delivery and returns. Manage suppliers, rental providers and subcontractors on scope, price and performance.

5. Estimating

  • Complete or review takeoffs and pricing for new projects and bids, including site surveys, scope reviews and risk allowances.

  • Ensure a clean handover from estimate to delivery with a clear budget, scope, assumptions and exclusions. Feed actual cost and productivity data back into future estimates.

6. Oversight of In-Office Project Coordinators

  • Share responsibility for directing the in-office project coordinators: assign and prioritize workload across projects and balance capacity.

  • Set and maintain standards for the documents coordinators manage, including purchase orders, change logs, RFI and submittal logs, permit and inspection tracking, billing backup and close-out packages.

  • Coach and develop coordinators. Provide input into hiring, onboarding and performance reviews.

  • Make sure coordinators supporting other regions work to the same processes and standards.

7. Quality, Safety and Compliance

  • Carry out regular site inspections for quality, workmanship and progress. Manage deficiencies through to sign-off.

  • Ensure work complies with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, the Canadian Electrical Code and applicable regulations in other provinces. Manage permits, ESA notifications and inspections.

  • Enforce BFG's health and safety program and the Occupational Health and Safety Act on site: hazard assessments, toolbox talks, lockout/tagout, PPE, and prompt reporting and investigation of incidents.

  • Confirm crews hold the required trade certification and that apprentice supervision meets regulatory requirements.

  • Deliver complete close-out packages: as-built drawings, test and inspection records, O&M manuals and warranty documents.

8. Leadership and Process

  • Mentor project managers and foremen moving toward project management, and support regional Project Managers on complex commercial or technical issues.

  • Develop and standardize project management templates, reporting and controls for the department.

  • Support recruitment and onboarding for project management and coordination roles.

Qualifications

Required:

  • 10+ years in commercial, retail or industrial electrical contracting, including 5+ years managing projects with full budget accountability.

  • 3+ years directing foremen and field crews on active sites.

  • A record of delivering multi-site or multi-project programs on schedule and on margin.

  • Working command of the Canadian Electrical Code, provincial electrical safety requirements and occupational health and safety law.

  • Strong estimating, job-costing and forecasting skills. Comfortable in an ERP.

  • Able to read and challenge drawings, specifications, estimates and contracts.

  • Clear, direct communicator with clients, crews and executives.

  • Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to sites across Canada.

Preferred:

  • Certificate of Qualification as a Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A) or Red Seal.

  • Master Electrician licence.

  • PMP, Gold Seal Certification, or a diploma or degree in electrical engineering or construction management.

  • Experience with national retail clients and rollout programs.

  • Experience in a business that has grown quickly or integrated acquired companies.

  • NetSuite familiarity is an asset.

  • French is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Office-based in Markham with regular time on active construction sites. Personal protective equipment required on site.

  • Regular travel within Ontario and periodic travel to other provinces, including overnight stays.

  • Occasional evening, overnight and weekend work to suit store operating hours, shutdowns and project deadlines.
