html Job Description

As an Inside Sales Representative, you will be the inside half of a two-person sales partnership on an established book of industrial accounts. An outside sales rep owns the customer relationship and is on the road; you keep everything moving from the Hamilton office. You will:

  • Handle inbound pricing requests
  • Quote ad-hoc work such as one-off clean-ups and racking removals
  • Keep accounts moving while your rep is traveling
  • Resolve service issues quickly so your rep stays in front of customers
  • Visit customer sites when a job needs eyes on it — taking photos and measurements, scoping the work, and quoting it

Customers are owners, plant and operations managers, and purchasing or materials managers at manufacturers, fabricators, and industrial scrap generators. There is no cold calling and no new-logo prospecting, because the outside sales team opens new accounts. Accounts are located across Southern Ontario, including Hamilton, Toronto, London, and the region broadly west of Montreal.

The base salary is $60,000 – $63,000 CAD, plus a discretionary annual bonus.

Compensation & Benefits
  • $60,000 – $63,000 CAD base salary, plus a discretionary annual bonus
  • The annual bonus is tied to individual and company performance and is not capped
  • Our client is privately held and rewards individual contribution case by case; strong performers have received above-normal increases and additional bonuses
  • There is no commission plan on this role
  • Health benefits, partially company-funded
  • Business expense account
  • Company fleet vehicles available for customer site visits — you will not be asked to use your own vehicle
  • 15 vacation days, 2 sick days, 2 personal days, plus the company Christmas shutdown
  • Further education reimbursement
  • Employee recognition, gifts, and rewards program, plus company social events
  • Formal performance reviews annually
  • A defined career path into outside sales — growing people into an outside seat is the stated purpose of this role
The Company & Culture

Our client has been in business approximately 90 years and is a family-owned, privately held metal recycler — the largest privately held company in its industry. They employ approximately 3,000 people across more than 136 locations in North America, with approximately 500 people at the Hamilton operation where this role is based. Revenue is growing 25% to 50% per year, and the US footprint is expanding, with recent or pending activity in Buffalo, Ohio, Maine, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.

The business is fully vertically integrated across four divisions — ferrous, non-ferrous, retail, and transportation — and runs an in-house trucking fleet significantly larger than those of its competitors. This allows the company to control material from collection through processing and final shipment. Approximately 80% of the material handled crosses the Canada–US border. Freight is the single largest cost in the business, so yard and transload locations are chosen deliberately to sit close to concentrated customer and mill activity.

The stated culture pillars are:

  • Passion & Excellence
  • Teamwork & Collaboration
  • Agility & Innovation
  • Community Engagement

Leadership is data-driven and hands-on, and long-tenured senior people are accessible for day-to-day questions. Commodity markets move, so priorities can shift quickly — candidates should be comfortable in a fast-moving environment.

Office Location & Sales Territory
  • Office location: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
  • One of the three roles may instead be based in the Greater Toronto Area. Our client expects to open a Toronto office as early as January or February 2027; that person would work alongside the GTA sales manager and move between Toronto and Hamilton.
  • Work arrangement: In office, 5 days per week. No work from home.
  • Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Sales territory: Southern Ontario — accounts span Hamilton, Toronto, London, and the region broadly west of Montreal. Northern Ontario is excluded.
  • Customer-facing expectations: Most of the work is done by phone and email from the office, with site visits as they come up — scoping and quoting a job, taking photos and measurements, or handling something the outside rep cannot get to.
  • Overnight travel: None (0%)
  • Candidates must live within a reasonable daily commute of Hamilton, Ontario — or of the GTA for the Toronto-based role.
Experience, Background & Education Requirements
  • 0 to 2 years of experience. This role is deliberately open to people early in their careers, including recent graduates.
  • Some sales, customer service, or business experience is welcome but it is not required.
  • A sales mentality is the single most important requirement. This role exists to grow someone into an outside sales rep, and our client is hiring for attitude, curiosity, and drive ahead of background.
  • Coachable and genuinely eager to learn the business from the ground up. You will learn by working next to an established sales rep and by spending time in the yard.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills — comfortable with customers by phone and email, and in person on site visits.
  • Responsiveness and a sense of urgency. Much of the value of this role is turning things around quickly while your rep is unavailable.
  • Comfortable with the arithmetic behind pricing and quoting. Our client describes it as grade-school math applied carefully.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail — a small error is costly in this business.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking ability across several accounts and open issues at once.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions with limited supervision.
  • Industry experience in metal recycling, waste, transportation, or manufacturing is preferred but not required. Full training is provided.
  • Backgrounds in car rental branch operations, hotel and hospitality operations, and other high-volume customer-facing roles have translated well.
  • Any quoting, estimating, or inside sales support experience is an asset.
  • Post-secondary education or equivalent professional experience. A degree is not required.
  • A driver's licence is an asset for customer site visits in a company fleet vehicle. It is not a hiring requirement.
  • Candidates who want a road-based outside sales seat from day one are not a fit for this role as posted. It is office-based, and it is designed to develop into outside sales over time.
  • Candidates looking for a purely administrative or back-office position are also not a fit. This is a sales role with a sales career path attached.
Technical Skills
  • Microsoft Excel — Basic to Intermediate
  • Microsoft Word and Outlook — Basic
  • Salesforce or comparable CRM — Basic, an asset; training is provided
  • Internal templates and systems are used for pricing and quoting. You will not be required to build spreadsheets from scratch, and the detailed profit-and-loss analysis is handled by a separate commercial analyst team.
The Product / Service / Solution
  • Purchase of ferrous scrap metal from industrial and commercial generators
  • Purchase of non-ferrous scrap metal, including copper, aluminum, brass, and related grades
  • Industrial scrap management services — bin and container placement, scheduled pickups, and on-site material handling
  • Freight and transportation services delivered through an in-house fleet
  • Retail scrap purchasing operations
Prospective Customers / Industry Focus / Decision Makers
  • Manufacturers, metal fabricators, and industrial plants that generate scrap as a by-product of production
  • Demolition, construction, and industrial service contractors
  • Smaller scrap dealers who sell material into the yard
  • Company size ranges from small owner-operated businesses to large multi-plant manufacturers
  • Customers are located across Southern Ontario. Material flows to processing yards and mills in both Canada and the United States.
  • Decision-makers: owners and general managers, plant and operations managers, purchasing and materials managers, and controllers
Sales Cycle / Order Value / Account Size
  • Accounts are recurring rather than one-time. Material moves continuously and the account relationship is ongoing.
  • Pricing is tied to published commodity indexes and market ranges that move with the market, so pricing conversations with accounts are frequent.
  • The Hamilton book runs to more than 800 accounts and takes in approximately 75% of the material entering the Hamilton yard.
  • Larger accounts receive closer and more frequent attention.
  • Most activity sits inside existing customer agreements.
  • Work that falls outside the regular flow — a one-off clean-up, a racking removal, extra material a customer needs gone — is scoped and quoted as it comes up, and much of that quoting sits with this role.
Competitive Advantages
  • Full vertical integration across ferrous, non-ferrous, retail, and transportation divisions — our client controls the material from pickup through to final destination.
  • An in-house transportation fleet significantly larger than those of its competitors.
  • More than 136 locations across North America, positioned close to concentrated customer and mill activity. Because freight is the largest cost in the business, location density is a direct pricing advantage.
  • Approximately 90 years in business, family owned, financially stable, and growing 25% to 50% per year.
  • Direct access to experienced, hands-on people who will answer questions as they come up.
Typical Day & Duties
  • 50% Account Support & Customer Communication: Acting as the inside contact on your accounts, covering while your outside rep travels, and keeping customers answered.
  • 25% Quoting & Pricing Requests: Turning around inbound price requests and quoting ad-hoc work.
  • 15% Problem Solving & Service Coordination: Bin issues and swaps, missed pickups, discrepancies on shipments, weights, pricing, and payments.
  • 10% Administrative Duties: Records, scale tickets, CRM activity, and supporting RFP and RFQ submissions.
  • 0% New Business Development: New accounts are opened by the outside sales team.

On a typical day you will be answering customers in your assigned book, turning around pricing requests, quoting ad-hoc work, and chasing down the answers your outside rep needs while they are on the road. You will sort out service problems — a wrong bin dropped off, a swap needed, a pickup missed — before they land on your rep's desk. You will work with the commercial analyst team, who prepare the profit-and-loss and account analysis and send it over so you and your rep can action it. You will keep records and CRM activity current and coordinate with operations, dispatch, purchasing, and finance. You will not always have an immediate answer for a customer, but you are expected to know which internal resource to go to for it. Site visits come up without much notice and are a real part of the job.

Leads
  • 0% cold calling and cold prospecting
  • 100% existing accounts — you are assigned a portion of an established book of business alongside the outside rep who owns it
  • New accounts are opened by the outside sales team
  • Inbound customer questions, pricing requests, and service issues come directly to you
Overnight Travel
  • None (0%)
  • Local day visits to customer sites in a company fleet vehicle. These are sporadic and often come up at short notice.
Support & Training
  • 3 to 6 months learning the business in the yard and across all four divisions — ferrous, non-ferrous, retail, and transportation — so you understand how material moves, is processed, priced, and shipped.
  • You are paired with an established outside sales rep and learn the accounts, the customers, and the business by working alongside them.
  • Paired training. Three people are being hired at the same time and will learn alongside each other.
  • Direct mentoring from the manager and from long-tenured, hands-on team members who are available for questions.
  • Training on how material is priced, how quotes are built, and how RFPs and RFQs are prepared and responded to.
  • Our client's position is that this industry is not learned in a classroom. New people learn by spending time with the existing team.
  • You will begin handling pricing requests, quotes, and service issues under guidance in year one, and move to running the inside side of a full set of accounts with minimal supervision in year two.
Why You Should Apply
  • A genuine entry point into a sales career. Our client is hiring for attitude and coachability, not for a long résumé, and the explicit purpose of this role is to grow you into an outside sales rep.
  • You inherit an established book of accounts. There is no cold calling and no starting from zero.
  • You learn the business by doing it, next to someone who already knows it — pricing, quoting, how RFPs work, and how material actually moves.
  • This seat provides one of the broadest educations available in the business. Current leaders who came up through this group include a vice president, a commercial manager, a service manager, and regional yard managers.
  • A defined path into outside sales for those who want it, without needing to live in a car to get sales experience now.
  • A 90-year-old, family-owned business that is the largest privately held company in its industry, growing 25% to 50% per year with an expanding North American footprint.
