Job Description

The House of Commons Parliamentary Precinct Operations is currently looking to staff the Cabinetmaker position.

As a Cabinetmaker, you will use your expertise in woodworking to construct, repair, and restore furniture both in the shop and on site, delivering specialized services throughout the Parliamentary Precinct. You will play an important role in conserving and restoring heritage pieces, building custom furniture, and repairing furniture, woodwork, and architectural millwork. A key aspect of this position is your ability to perform wood carving and decorative restoration work, including the reproduction, repair, and restoration of carved details on heritage furniture and architectural features while preserving their historical integrity. You will also provide specialized woodworking services to Members of Parliament, House Administration, and the Library of Parliament, and contribute to special projects and events as required. To succeed in this role, you bring demonstrated experience in wood carving, along with the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and commitment needed to preserve historically significant assets in accordance with heritage conservation standards.

This position requires extensive physical efforts and therefore, the candidates must successfully pass a pre-placement medical / physical fitness assessment.

Qualifications

Education :

  • Post-secondary education in woodworking and a recognized cabinetmaking certification obtained through an apprenticeship program, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience;
  • Specialized knowledge, training, and technical expertise in wood carving.

Experiences :

  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, colleagues, and stakeholders;
  • Experience in woodworking and cabinetmaking, including the application of both contemporary and heritage restoration techniques;
  • Experience performing wood carving and restoration work;
  • Experience in the use of various equipment and tools;
  • Experience applying occupational health and safety standards, practices, and procedures in a workshop environment.
