The Role

Reporting to the President, the Director of Finance leads the financial operations and strategy of the organization. The Director is responsible for managing financial planning, reporting, analysis, and overall fiscal management to ensure the organization's financial health and long-term growth. The Director provides direction and leadership to the finance team.


Responsibilities:


Financial Strategy and Planning:

  • Develop and implement the financial strategy aligned with the company's overall business objectives.
  • Coordinate tax strategies with external consultants to minimize corporate tax liabilities.
  • Advise and provide recommendations to the executive team on financial decisions, risk management, and capital allocation.
  • Collaborate with other departments to create budgets, forecasts, and financial models that support strategic initiatives.
  • Advise on long-term business and financial planning strategies.
  • Ensure all capital improvement plans are being executed and projects are tracking to budget/schedule.


Financial Reporting and Analytics:

  • Develop and streamline dashboard reporting for ownership.
  • Manage and oversee all financial reporting (incl. year-end and budgeting).
  • Forecast and manage cash flow from operating activities.
  • Analyze returns and/or profit margin, report on variances to budget/proforma, and provide strategic recommendations to ownership.
  • Assist with investor reporting/distributions and streamline the process with a focus on scalability.
  • Assist with the underwriting and due-diligence process, including the management of investor commitments, for new acquisitions.

Stakeholder/Investor Relations:

  • Improve client/customer relationship management through regular account touchpoints and streamlining the client/customer experience.
  • Cultivate and maintain investor relations and partnership compliance.
  • Contribute to business growth through potential fundraising for new acquisitions, attending networking events, and referring business development opportunities.
  • Manage the financial onboarding process of new properties/contracts.


Financial Management Systems/Process:

  • Create efficiencies and accuracy in financial management processes/systems through improved processing speeds, delivering real-time analytics and promoting scalability through automated finance functions.
  • Oversee compliance and internal controls to mitigate financial risks and ensure compliance with regulatory standards and accounting principles.
  • Identify operating efficiencies, capitalize on revenue-generating opportunities, and maintain a high level of quality and customer service.
  • Oversee payroll for the organization; oversee the processing of employee salaries, bonuses, necessary deductions, ROE generation, etc.

Leadership:

  • Lead and develop the finance team, providing guidance, mentoring, and professional growth opportunities.
  • Deliver regular performance check-ins and year end performance reviews.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performing finance department.
  • Participate as member of the Executive Team providing constructive input on organizational challenges and opportunities.
  • Represent the Executive Team as the Finance lead, providing organizational updates in all staff meetings/events as necessary.

Working Conditions:

  • Hybrid in-office/remote work environment with occasional remote work permitted.
  • Regular office hours

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business
  • Canadian professional accounting designation (CA, CGA, CMA or CPA) is preferred.


Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in a senior role leading a team.
  • Experience in financial reporting and analysis as well as financial audits and compliance.
  • Knowledge of payroll and taxes would be an asset.
  • Strong proficiency with Office 365, Sharepoint, and task management software (e.g., Monday.com).
  • Experience with Yardi is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to perform or delegate finance tasks to ensure completion.
  • Professionalism in all areas of office conduct with a focus on customer service.
  • Strong organizational abilities and the ability to work effectively with different levels of management and across different functions.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet crucial deadlines and demands.
