Mould Maker, Field Service

Location: Windsor, Ontario area, with regular trips to the Detroit, Michigan area

Work Arrangement: Field based, primarily at tool shops and customer sites

Compensation: Up to $39.38 per hour

Shift: Days, with overtime eligibility

Position Summary

Our client, a well-established manufacturer of large automotive injection moulds, is seeking an experienced Mould Maker to join its field service team. The company already has one person in this position and is adding a second Mould Maker to support additional customer work.

The position is based in the Windsor area and involves attending tool trials, performing injection mould repairs at local tool shops and travelling regularly across the border to customer sites in the Detroit area.

This is a highly independent position. The Mould Maker will often be the only company representative on site and must be comfortable assessing mould issues, planning repairs and adjustments, and carrying out the required work without direct supervision.

The role may also provide occasional support to the company's GTA plant during busy production periods.

Key Responsibilities

Tool Trials, Repair and Field Service

  • Attend tool trials and perform injection mould repairs at tool shops in the Windsor area.
  • Troubleshoot and repair moulds based on trial results, working independently on site.
  • Travel to customer sites in the Detroit area as required, often on short notice.
  • Support the customer and Program Manager during tryouts.
  • Make sure customer specifications and company standards are met on every job.
  • Complete mould repairs and modifications to required quality standards.
  • Respond quickly to customer tooling issues and resolve concerns effectively during site visits.
  • Support the GTA plant during busy production periods when requested.

Documentation and Root Cause Analysis

  • Document all customer discussions and instructions from tryouts and offsite service visits.
  • Use the non-conformance process to record issues, rework and delays.
  • Identify root causes of tooling problems.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of field service work and customer requirements.
  • Complete monthly expense reports for approved travel costs.

Planning, Quality and Team Support

  • Plan and organize your own workflow for assigned tasks.
  • Share your mould building knowledge with other team members, with attention to safety, quality, cost and timing.
  • Work closely with Program Management, Engineering, Scheduling, Machining and Management.
  • Support safety, quality, 5S and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Follow ISO 9001 quality systems and company standards.

Qualifications

  • Extensive mould making experience, with 10+ years preferred.
  • Automotive industry experience is required.
  • Proven ability to work alone and make sound repair decisions without direct supervision.
  • Able to cross into the U.S., including the Detroit area, with no restrictions.
  • Thorough knowledge of mould making and mould build standards.
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot problems and identify root causes.
  • TIG welding ability.
  • Laser welding experience is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of NX or similar CAD software.
  • Ability to build a small tool, approximately 3' x 3'.
  • Strong mechanical and mathematical aptitude.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
  • Grade 12 diploma minimum.
  • 431A Mould Maker certification is an strong asset but is not required.
  • 430A Tool & Die Maker certification is an strong asset.
  • Technical college diploma is an asset.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily based at tool shops and customer sites throughout the Windsor and Detroit areas.
  • Most work is performed indoors.
  • Regular cross-border travel to the Detroit area is required.
  • Travel may be required on short notice.
  • Occasional support at the GTA plant during busy production periods.
  • Safe work practices, incident reporting and 5S standards are expected every day.
