Role Summary
Reporting directly to the CEO, you will be the trusted source for GS Construction's financial picture, responsible for clear, transparent reporting, strong controls, and the project insight that leadership relies on. You will lead the accounting team, oversee job costing and WIP across the water, sewer, and land development projects our communities depend on, and work closely with the CEO to expand how AI is used across finance. In This Role You Will Be Responsible For
- Financial Reporting & Month-End Close: Lead the month-end close and internal financial reporting, including review of high-level journal entries such as capital asset additions, amortization schedules, accruals, and reclassifications.
- Team Leadership: Lead and develop a small, growing accounting team, providing clear direction, coaching, and follow-through so the team delivers consistent, high-quality work.
- Finance Innovation & AI: Partner with the CEO to lead AI adoption across finance, building on the tools already in use to automate invoice processing, reconciliations, reporting, and forecasting while maintaining strong controls over accuracy and data security.
- Job Costing & WIP: Own job costing and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, and review project performance with Business Unit Managers to support accurate forecasting and accountability.
- Cash Flow & Transactional Oversight: Oversee accounts receivable and payable, payroll, and banking, ensuring accurate labour allocation and payroll compliance, and give leadership clear, proactive visibility into cash flow.
- Strategic Partnership with the CEO: Provide the CEO with clear financial insight, cost analysis, and scenario modelling, and support the annual budgeting and reforecasting cycles that inform operational and strategic decisions.
- Systems & Process Improvement: Strengthen accounting processes, documentation, and reporting workflows, and connect data across systems such as Spectrum and Traqspera to improve visibility for leadership.
- Controls, Compliance & Insurance: Maintain strong internal controls and financial compliance, coordinate annual insurance renewals, and keep policy documentation and coverage records current.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Build strong working relationships with Operations Leaders, Business Unit Managers, and senior management, translating financial information into practical terms.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of progressive finance experience, including 3-5 years as a controller leading an accounting team, with recent experience in the construction or civil infrastructure industry.
- Direct experience managing job costing, WIP reporting, and forecasting on project-based work.
- CPA designation required.
- Advanced Excel and financial modelling skills.
- Hands-on experience using AI tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, or Claude to streamline finance work (for example reporting, analysis, or reconciliations), with sound judgment about verifying outputs and protecting financial data.
- Experience implementing AI or automation in a finance function is a strong asset.
- Experience with Spectrum is an asset.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- This position is based on-site at our Acheson office, where you will work closely with Operations, Business Unit Managers, and leadership.
- Standard Monday to Friday schedule, with additional time as needed during month-end, year-end, and budgeting periods.
