Position Overview
The role of the Senior Mine Engineer is to manage and provide technical support to the operations team, as well as facilitate the safe and cost effective mine planning and production at the Sugar Zone Underground operations. The role provides support to the Mining Manager and Engineering Manager in overseeing and reporting on overall mine performance and future direction.
Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability
Safety / Environment
· Ensure approved safe work systems/procedures are always practised and adhered to ensure duties are performed in a manner that minimises risk to personnel, equipment, environment and reputation.
· Maintain high standards of operational housekeeping at all times.
· Ensure thorough and prompt incident/accident reporting & maintain active involvement in safety initiatives to ensure a safe work environment.
· Oversee the adequacy of Emergency preparedness Engineering Requirements, triggered by production and ventilation events, for effective response to underground emergencies.
· Actively promote safe production through implementation of best practice methods of operation into design (production and ventilation) and regular review/audit of existing practices.
· Abide by and proactively comply with Company policies, procedures, guidelines and systems, as well as all relevant legislation.

· Coach, mentor, assess and monitor the work performance of the Engineering Department.
· Provide Engineering support to ensure safety and production objectives are met.
· Monitor mining contractor performance in line with the contract, mine plan and approved practices and procedures to ensure safe and cost-effective use of resources.

Knowledge / Skills
· Develop, implement and regularly review documented standard processes and systems for planning and production functions to ensure the mine is operating safely, efficiently and consistently across crews.
· Ensure accurate production reconciliations are completed as part of the end of month process, summary reports are submitted to relevant stakeholders and, any improvement initiatives highlighted in the reports are promptly evaluated and, where practicable, implemented.
· Effectively manage change through documented change management processes such that records are available and accessible to justify decisions.
· Prepare safe, economic mine plans (including stope designs) are supported by appropriate documentation.
· Complete financial evaluations and optimisations of planning and production activities to ensure the most economical plan is implemented based on available inputs.
· Regularly challenge, review and optimise mine production using knowledge gathered from previous work history, literature, conferences and or peer discussions
· Provide engineering support to ensure all infrastructure services (ventilation, power, air, water) are maintained to ensure the safety and health of underground personnel.
· Assist in the compilation of Life-of-Mine (LOM) designs and schedules through to short term designs and 3-Month Plans accurately and within agree timeframes.
· Conduct regular and thorough inspections of all work areas to ensure compliance to engineered plan.
· Provide regular technical review and feedback for output produced from the Production Engineers.
· Provide technical review and feedback to mine planning functions such that the optimal mine plan is developed.
Teamwork
· Conduct team meetings and provide accurate handover notes/information on operational status, problems, events and process changes to your team.
· Regularly engage with tech services personnel to maintain high level of understanding and awareness of progress to plan.
· Effectively communicate any operational requirements or changes to planning and production which may affect other business functions e.g. development profiles, HOLD points, changing drill density, changing explosives product, additional ventilation requirements, changes to re-entry periods etc.
· Participate in and support business improvement initiatives within the business.
· Support the Mining Superintendent and Engineering Manager in day-to-day activities.
Planning & Organisation
· Prioritise and complete tasks accurately as to specifications as assigned by your Supervisor within required timeframes.
· Be punctual to work and all required site meetings.
· Attend and actively contribute to site meetings.
· Supervise and achieve targets set for all engineering planning, and production functions.
· Control cost by optimizing the mine plan and mine production without compromising on safety or operational requirements and continuously monitor results and expenditure in line with approved budgets and the mine plan.
Experience, qualifications and essential skills required
- Bachelor Mining Engineering BEng (minimum) or equivalent.
- Proficient use and application of MsOffice suite, and relevant mining software including but not limited to Deswik Suite and VentSim.
- Previous experience and knowledge of underground mining functions applicable to narrow vein underground gold mining.
- Robust understanding of mine planning systems, including exposure to short-, medium- and long-term forecasting.
- Robust understanding of mine ventilation systems, both primary and secondary, and statutory requirements pertaining to mine ventilation.
- Current Canadian Driver's License.· Basic understanding of geotechnical underground stress regimes and potential effects on ground movements.
- Understanding of performance management and instilling accountability.
- Proven history to develop, manage and deliver on short to mid-term mine plans in line with long term planning commitments.
