About the Opportunity: We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Mine Operations Manager to lead the safe, efficient, and sustainable operation of a hard-rock open-pit quarry supporting a major cement plant in Exshaw, Alberta. This is a key leadership position responsible for quarry production, mining, drilling and blasting, crushing, material handling, equipment maintenance, cost control, safety, environmental compliance, and team leadership. The Quarry Manager will be an integral member of the Plant Leadership Team and will ensure a safe, reliable, and high-quality supply of raw materials for cement production. This is a 100% on-site operational role in Exshaw, AB. Candidates must be able to reliably commute to the site daily and work safely through all seasonal weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities: Mine Operations Manager– Hard Rock Open Pit Mining
Quarry Operations & Production
  • Lead daily quarry and mining operations, including drilling, blasting, blast layouts and patterns, primary crushing, and raw material stacking.
  • Monitor production, quality, productivity, and operational performance.
  • Ensure reliable supply of limestone and other required raw materials.
Mine Planning & Execution
  • Review and execute long-term mine plans and ensure reserve quality is verified.
  • Develop and implement effective crushing and extraction strategies for limestone and additives such as shale, gypsum, iron, and sandstone.
  • Support mine development and reclamation planning.
  • Apply sound knowledge of rock mechanics, highwall stability, and open-pit mining practices.
Equipment & Cost Management
  • Oversee mobile equipment maintenance activities and scheduling.
  • Manage equipment reliability, asset health, and maintenance costs.
  • Oversee the mobile equipment maintenance budget.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce costs and minimize reliance on third-party services.
  • Utilize SAP for work orders, purchasing, and budget reporting.
Safety & Environmental Leadership
  • Provide visible, hands-on leadership in Health, Safety & Environmental performance.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, regulatory requirements, and site safety procedures.
  • Promote proper PPE use and safe operating practices.
  • Participate in and support environmental compliance and reclamation activities.
  • Respirator fit testing is required for the role; candidates must be clean-shaven where the respirator seal contacts the face.
Team & Labour Leadership
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a high-performing quarry team.
  • Work effectively with a unionized hourly workforce and contractors.
  • Build strong relationships across quarry, plant, maintenance, engineering, and leadership teams.
  • Promote accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
Qualifications & Experience Required
  • 5–8+ years of progressive operational management experience in a true hard-rock open-pit mining or quarry environment.
  • Proven experience with drill-and-blast operations, mine planning, extraction, and open-pit quarry management.
  • Strong knowledge of rock mechanics, highwall stability, mine development, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Experience managing equipment maintenance, budgets, production, and operational costs.
  • Strong safety and environmental leadership experience.
  • Experience working with unionized employees and contractors.
  • Advanced working knowledge of SAP, particularly work orders, purchasing, and budget reporting.
  • Strong Microsoft Office/Excel or Google Sheets skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Geology, or a related technical discipline is preferred; equivalent progressive management experience will be considered.
Important Experience Requirement This position requires genuine hard-rock/open-pit extraction experience. Candidates whose background is limited to general aggregate processing, asphalt, concrete, or plant operations without hands-on drill-and-blast, mine planning, and hard-rock extraction experience will not be considered.
