Company: Preservation of Crowsnest Pass History & Heritage Ltd.
Location: Crowsnest Pass, Alberta (Remote Design / On-Site Alignment)
Contract Type: Project-Based Contract
Timeline: Q4 2026 (Drawings required for final submission by December 2026)
Compensation: Competitive Project-Based Flat Fee / Contract Rate
Offices: Must be in Calgary or to the south of Alberta, to Lethbridge and Crowsnest Pass
Project Overview
We are seeking a visionary, highly skilled Professional Structural Engineer (P.Eng.) to finalize engineering analyses and deliver stamped design drawings for a monumental cultural landmark: a 50-to-65-foot-tall steel replica of a Coal Miner's Davy Safety Lantern.
Operating as an interactive climbing tourist attraction, this unique vertical tower features a double-helix spiral staircase leading to an enclosed 360-degree glass Observation Deck, wrapped in an exterior architectural exoskeleton of 40-foot aluminum columns. The project is situated on a rocky site adjacent to Highway 3 in the Municipality of the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta.
The successful candidate will produce the comprehensive package of structural drawings required to clear municipal Building Permit conditions and Alberta Transportation roadside development reviews before the end of 2026.
Core Responsibilities
- Engineering Analysis: Perform comprehensive wind load calculations for "Other Structures" matching the specific high-velocity wind profiles of the Crowsnest Pass under the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition (NBC-AE).
- Foundation Design: Engineer a robust, reinforced concrete block foundation (estimated 5' deep, 12' to 15' diameter) anchored into the rocky sub-surface terrain based on provided geotechnical parameters.
- Superstructure Engineering: Validate structural integrity for a 6-module vertical stack of 12-foot diameter steel cylinders, ensuring load capacities handle a minimum live load of 100 lbs/sq ft.
- Stair & Core Engineering: Design and verify the structural connections for the internal 126-step double-helix spiral staircase core, structural landings, and internal hanging guard lattices.
- Exoskeleton & Components Integration: Establish the 3-point pinning connection layout for the six exterior 40' x 12” sloped aluminum posts and the optional 12-foot high central steel roof lantern hook.
- Stamping & Approvals: Provide professional engineering authentication (P.Eng. Stamp/Seal) on all final structural blueprints and specification sheets to satisfy the Alberta Safety Codes Authority (ASCA) and municipal guidelines.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Credentials: Must be a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with APEGA (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta).
- Software Proficiency: Advanced, expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD, CAD, or REVIT is mandatory. Deliverables must be fully detailed, layered, and scalable digital models.
- Domain Expertise: Proven track record in structural steel design, connection detailing, modular construction methodologies, high-overturning-moment vertical vessels/towers, and heavy concrete foundation systems.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of the National Building Code – 2023 Alberta Edition, CSA S16 (Design of Steel Structures), and CSA W59 (Welded Steel Construction).
- Communication: Exceptional collaborative skills to interface with project managers, off-site fabrication welding shops, and municipal planning staff.
Project Deliverables
1. Complete, code-compliant, APEGA-stamped Structural Drawing Packages (Foundation plans, anchor bolt matrices, structural shell modules, framing plans, connection details, and stair/handrail assemblies).
2. Engineering calculation reports for Wind Load, Overturning Moments, and Dead/Live Load limits for the permitting record.
3. Collaboration with mechanical/electrical designers to ensure structural provisions for high-CFM exhaust fan points and automated intake dampers are accounted for.
How to Apply
Interested engineers or consulting firms should submit a proposal package including:
- A brief cover letter outlining your experience with unique vertical structures or industrial steel fabrication.
- Your professional resume/firm profile highlighting active APEGA standing.
- Examples or a portfolio of relevant CAD/REVIT structural drawings.
- An estimated contract fee projection or hourly rate card for this scope of work.
Please submit your proposal electronically with the subject line "RFP Application – Structural Engineer: Davy Safety Lantern".
