Birth Worker

We provide primary health care through a range of options including prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment. Our interprofessional teams include health professionals, educators and support workers representing both traditional Indigenous and contemporary models of care. Also, use of wholistic healthcare that addresses the heart, mind, spirit, and body. The Birth Worker provides wholistic, culturally grounded primary health care support services for the birthing family from conception, through pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postpartum period. The Birth Worker adheres to the philosophy of Indigenous Midwifery care.

NOTE: Traditional practices involve cultural ceremonies and burning sacred medicines including tobacco, sweetgrass, sage and cedar within the work setting.

PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Facilitate client access to reproductive health education, resources, and services.
• Plan and facilitate culturally relevant prenatal, postpartum, parenting, and family wellness education.
• Support families in preparing for pregnancy, birth, postpartum recovery, infant care, feeding, and parenting.
• Provide home, clinic, and community-based support throughout the prenatal and postpartum periods.
• Connect birthing families with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, cultural services, traditional teachings, and ceremony.
• Provide doula-informed emotional, practical, and advocacy support during pregnancy, labour, birth, and postpartum, as appropriate.
• Support maternal and infant nutrition, including meal preparation, breastfeeding support, infant feeding education, and family wellness activities.
• Advocate for and assist families in navigating health and social services locally and across provincial borders, including Manitoba.
• Assist families with postpartum needs, including documentation, community resources, support planning, and referrals.
• Develop and support maternal, infant, and family wellness programming based on community needs and program priorities.
• Other duties as the program evolves and as required. In extenuating situations or in the event of an emergency, may be redeployed to endure provision of essential services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Undergraduate degree in health, social work, or appropriate combination of relevant education and work experience;
• Indigenous Doula training and Indigenous lactation training considered an asset;
• Ability to work in a collaborative, de-colonial, trauma-informed and client-centered approach and to support WNHAC values in meaningful ways;
• Demonstrated experience and understanding of wholistic health and wellbeing;
• Good knowledge of human development, family wellness and experience working with families at risk considered an asset;
• Deep understanding and experience of Indigenous culture, values, and perspectives as well as traditional and contemporary health care practices
• Ability to speak and understand Anishinaabemowin a definite asset;
• Experience working in an Indigenous organization; understanding and/or willingness to learn of Indigenous culture and values;
• Proof of immunization in compliance with policy requirements is mandatory;
• Valid drivers' license, own vehicle and willingness and ability to travel required;
• Criminal records check and current drivers' abstract required;
• Commitment to ongoing training and professional development relevant to job requirements;
• Positive attitude and capacity to act as a healthy lifestyle role model.

Salary: $62,575-$85,265 with excellent benefits, including HOOPP pension plan. Salary is based on education and experience.
