Shipping & Receiving Supervisor – Heavy Manufacturing
Location: Hamilton, ON
Salary: $75,000–$90,000 annually, depending on experience
Are you an experienced Shipping and Receiving Supervisor who understands the challenges of moving heavy steel, fabricated components and industrial equipment?
We are recruiting a hands-on leader to oversee shipping, receiving, inventory control and material movement within a heavy manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will coordinate daily shipments, supervise warehouse personnel and ensure large, heavy and irregularly shaped products are loaded and transported safely and accurately.
This position is best suited to someone with experience in structural steel, heavy fabrication, industrial machinery, construction equipment or a related manufacturing environment.
What You'll Do
- Supervise and provide daily direction to shipping, receiving and material-handling employees.
- Schedule work, assign responsibilities and ensure appropriate staffing coverage.
- Coordinate incoming and outgoing shipments according to production schedules, customer requirements and project deadlines.
- Plan the safe loading and unloading of heavy steel, fabricated assemblies, machinery, components and raw materials.
- Coordinate transportation using flatbed, step-deck and other specialized carriers.
- Verify shipment dimensions, weights, delivery requirements and transportation instructions.
- Ensure finished equipment and fabricated components are properly blocked, braced, packaged and secured for transportation.
- Oversee material movement using overhead cranes, forklifts and other heavy material-handling equipment.
- Ensure appropriate rigging, chains, slings and lifting devices are selected and used safely.
- Inspect incoming materials against purchase orders, packing slips and specifications.
- Verify outgoing shipments against sales orders, work orders, drawings and packing lists.
- Prepare and review bills of lading, packing slips, shipping labels, commercial invoices and other required documentation.
- Communicate with carriers, freight forwarders, vendors, customers and internal departments.
- Track shipments and address delays, shortages, damaged materials and delivery discrepancies.
- Maintain accurate inventory and shipping transactions within the company's ERP system.
- Organize warehouse, yard and staging areas to support efficient material flow.
- Coordinate cycle counts and assist with physical inventory.
- Work closely with Production, Purchasing, Engineering, Quality and Project Management.
- Train employees on shipping procedures, material handling, equipment operation and workplace safety.
- Conduct regular safety talks and ensure employee certifications remain current.
- Enforce PPE, lifting, rigging, load-securement and equipment-inspection requirements.
- Monitor departmental performance and recommend improvements to safety, productivity, inventory accuracy and shipping processes.
What We're Looking For
- Five or more years of shipping and receiving experience within manufacturing, steel, fabrication, industrial equipment or a similar environment.
- Previous supervisory or team-lead experience.
- Experience handling heavy, long or irregularly shaped materials and finished products.
- Strong knowledge of shipping, receiving, warehousing and inventory-control procedures.
- Experience coordinating flatbed or specialized freight.
- Familiarity with overhead cranes, forklifts, rigging and heavy material-handling equipment.
- Knowledge of load planning and securement requirements.
- Experience preparing bills of lading, packing slips and freight documentation.
- Strong computer skills and experience using ERP or inventory-management systems.
- Ability to read work orders, packing lists, drawings and material specifications.
- Strong leadership, organization, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- A strong commitment to workplace safety, quality and accuracy.
