Job Title: Senior Metallurgist

Reporting directly to the Chief Metallurgist, the Senior Metallurgist is responsible for providing technical metallurgical support, process monitoring, optimization, and troubleshooting across production circuits while supporting production, safety, and compliance expectations.

During pre-commissioning and commissioning, this role will support operational readiness through metallurgical input into process control strategies, operating procedures, safe work instructions (SWIs), sampling programs, and other duties as assigned.

Once operational, the role will provide technical oversight and metallurgical guidance across crushing, conveying, grinding, flotation, dewatering, and tailings areas.

As a key member of the Mill technical team, the Senior Metallurgist will play an integral role in developing process capability, supporting operational readiness, and driving continuous improvement in plant performance.

Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Safety and Culture

• Promote a proactive safety culture through technical field presence, hazard identification, job observations, and area audits.
• Enforce lockout/tagout, confined space, PPE, SOP/SWI, and JSEA requirements.
• Investigate and document incidents and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
• Maintain compliance with company policies, site standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Commissioning & Operations Readiness

• Support the commissioning team with metallurgical expertise, process sampling, data interpretation, and plant performance troubleshooting.
• Assist the Chief Metallurgist with operational readiness by assisting in the development of the metallurgical accounting database, performance monitoring guidelines, and the daily, weekly, and monthly (including reconciliation) reporting structure.
• Development of the sampling program with support from the assay lab.
• Support onboarding for metallurgy team (as required).
• Collaborate with subject matter experts, management, Mill Trainers, and operations personnel to support operator training programs, process control guidelines, and Safe Work Instructions (SWIs) for operational readiness.

Metallurgical Responsibilities

• Provide visible technical leadership and maintain strong metallurgical oversight across mill areas.
• Troubleshoot daily metallurgical and process performance issues.
• Develop daily production review process to analyze trends and assess metallurgical and operational improvements.
• Encourage participation in Short Interval Control and production meetings by providing metallurgical insight, interpreting performance gaps, and recommending corrective actions.
• Coordinate with operations, maintenance, training, and other departments to support reliable mill performance and optimized recovery.
• Support shutdown planning, plant trials, sampling campaigns, and process improvement initiatives as required.

Technical Leadership

• Coach, mentor, and provide technical guidance to Plant Metallurgists, EITs and coop students.
• Provide timely technical feedback, document process observations, and support individual and team development.
• Foster accountability, integrity, and consistent technical standards across the metallurgy team.

Continuous Improvement

• Identify process inefficiencies, equipment issues, and opportunities to improve throughput, recovery, downtime, and housekeeping.
• Lead metallurgical troubleshooting and root cause analysis for process upsets, recovery losses, and operational disruptions.
• Encourage team participation in operational excellence, metallurgical improvement, and process optimization initiatives.

The Ideal Candidate

Education/Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent site-based mineral processing experience may be considered.
• Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in British Columbia, eligibility for registration with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or Engineer-in-Training status with a demonstrated path toward registration is preferred.

Experience / Skills

• Minimum 6+ years of experience as a Metallurgist.
• Demonstrated leadership experience or capability, with sound knowledge of social processes and team development principles.
• Strong technical leadership, communication, data analysis, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to safety-first decision-making.
• Ability to influence, coach, and support operations teams while upholding technical and operating standards.
• Strong understanding of metallurgical accounting, production KPIs, sampling practices, plant operations, process control, risk controls, and maintenance coordination.
• High integrity, sound judgment, and willingness to make data-informed recommendations in support of safety, people, process performance, and asset integrity.
  

Work Location & Conditions

This is a site-based camp job at Eskay Creek Mine site. This position involves working at a remote mine site on a 15 days on/13 days off rotation.

The Eskay Creek Revitalization Project is located within the Coast Mountains of Northwestern British Columbia and Tahltan Territory. Ground transportation will be provided from local communities to the Eskay Creek Site facilities. For those applicants located elsewhere in western Canada, flight transportation from major urban centers will be provided to the Terrace or Smithers airports, from which shuttles will provide transportation to the Eskay Creek Camp facilities. Travel time and expenses are subject to Skeena's Travel Policy.

There will be exposure to extreme temperatures in all seasons including working outdoors in snow, mud, ice, and water conditions, walking to and from different locations on uneven ground, prolonged periods of standing and physically handling/lifting/moving heavy objects.

Compensation

The expected salary range for this position is CAD 125,000-165,000, in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.
