Management

Thyssen Mining is currently seeking an experienced Area Manager to support our operations across Ontario and Saskatchewan. This key leadership role is responsible for overseeing project performance, fostering strong client relationships, supporting site management teams, and ensuring the safe and efficient execution of underground mining projects.

The Area Manager is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for multiple underground mining and construction projects within an assigned region or portfolio. This role oversees safety, operational performance, client relationships, workforce planning, financial results, and project delivery while ensuring projects are executed safely, efficiently, and profitably.

The Area Manager works closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, corporate departments, and client representatives to support operational excellence, business growth, and long-term client partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership

  • Champion a proactive safety culture across all assigned operations.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety programs, legislative requirements, and client standards.
  • Monitor site safety performance and lead corrective actions when required.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, investigations, and incident reviews.
  • Promote continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental performance.

Operational Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction to Project Managers and site leadership teams.
  • Ensure projects are staffed, equipped, and supported to meet operational objectives.
  • Monitor productivity, schedules, resource allocation, and project milestones.
  • Support operational improvements and implementation of best practices.
  • Ensure projects meet contractual obligations and client expectations.

Financial Management

  • Monitor project budgets, forecasts, profitability, and key financial metrics.
  • Review monthly financial reports and identify risks and opportunities.
  • Support cost-control initiatives and resource optimization strategies.
  • Assist project teams in developing corrective action plans where required.
  • Ensure timely reporting and forecasting across assigned operations.

Client Relations & Business Development

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
  • Act as a senior operational representative for the company.
  • Participate in contract negotiations, project reviews, and client meetings.
  • Identify opportunities for additional work and future business growth.
  • Support estimating, proposal development, and project start-up activities.

Workforce Management

  • Ensure projects are appropriately staffed with qualified personnel.
  • Support recruitment, succession planning, and workforce development initiatives.
  • Coach, mentor, and develop Project Managers and operational leaders.
  • Promote employee engagement and retention strategies.
  • Support performance management and leadership development programs.

Compliance & Corporate Governance

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain adherence to HR, payroll, procurement, environmental, and asset management standards.
  • Support corporate initiatives, risk management activities, and strategic objectives.
  • Ensure consistent operational reporting across all assigned projects.

Reporting & Performance Monitoring

  • Participate in regular operations and management meetings.
  • Prepare and present operational updates and performance reports.
  • Monitor project KPIs related to safety, productivity, cost, quality, and workforce performance.
  • Identify trends and implement continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications & Experience

Required

  • Diploma or Degree in Mining Engineering, Engineering Technology, Business Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of underground mining experience, including at least 2 years in on-site Project Management.
  • Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience managing multiple projects, operations, or business units.
  • Strong knowledge of underground mining methods, project execution, and contractor management.
  • Experience managing budgets, forecasting, and financial performance.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to travel extensively.

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.
  • Mine Manager's Certificate or equivalent mining certification.
  • Experience in mine contracting, development, shaft sinking, raiseboring, or underground construction.
  • Training in leadership, project management, or business administration.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office, surface, and underground mine site environments.
  • Frequent travel to operating sites, client locations, and corporate offices.
  • Exposure to active mining and construction environments.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE and safely access operational work areas.
