Carpentry Service Project Specialist

Why Join Us?
Tired of being away from home, working evenings and weekends, or always being on call with no real work-life balance? It's time for a change. At Ackard, our projects run Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM—no evenings, no weekends, and no on-call stress. You'll get all statutory holidays off, plus we shut down for about a week over Christmas so you can truly unplug. We're a close-knit team that values family, collaboration, and balance. If you're looking for a place to put down roots, grow your skills, and enjoy coming to work each day, you'll feel right at home here. Ackard has been a trusted name in Edmonton for over 40 years, known for quality craftsmanship and homes that truly stand out.

What You'll Do

As Ackard's Carpentry Service Project Specialist, you'll be the customer's key point of contact, taking each service job from the first conversation to the final walkthrough. You'll ensure every job is properly scoped, smoothly coordinated, and completed to the customer's satisfaction and Ackard's standards. This role combines customer service, estimating, project coordination, and hands-on construction.

Typical Service Work

Service jobs are smaller repairs and improvements that fall outside Ackard's Specific Projects, Mainstream, and Warranty & QC divisions. Examples may include:

  • Floor-rot, sill, soffit, and minor leak-damage repairs.
  • Minor interior and exterior carpentry, drywall, wall, flooring, and finishing touch-ups.
  • Small tenant improvements and alterations to existing spaces.
  • Minor plumbing fixture replacements, such as faucets or toilets, where permitted and appropriate.
  • Ordering and installing replacement countertops on existing cabinet bases.
  • Minor insulation or enclosure improvements, including issues around front closets or HVAC-adjacent areas.
  • Coordinating specialized work such as tree removal, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other trade services when required.

Your responsibilities will include:

Estimating & Scoping

  • Respond to service inquiries, gather information, troubleshoot concerns, and arrange site visits.
  • Inspect the site, take measurements, document existing conditions, and identify access, safety, or trade requirements.
  • Recommend practical options, prepare clear scopes and estimates, and redirect work if it belongs with another Ackard department.

Customer Service & Sales Support

  • Act as the customer's main point of contact from the initial inquiry through completion.
  • Clearly communicate options and estimates, follow up on approvals, provide updates, and address concerns professionally.

Project Coordination & Oversight

  • Manage your schedule and plan each job, including sequencing, materials, tools, site protection, access, and waste removal.
  • Coordinate assigned employees and specialized trades, including their scope, timing, pricing, and site access.
  • Document approvals, scope changes, labour, materials, and completion details for scheduling and invoicing.
  • Inspect completed work, correct deficiencies, and review the finished job with the customer.

Performing the Work

  • Complete a broad range of hands-on residential repairs, installations, carpentry, and finishing work.
  • Lead by example when employees or trade partners are assigned to the job.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized site while meeting Ackard's quality and customer-service standards.
  • Following and reinforcing Ackard's safety, quality, and customer-service standards at every stage of the job.
  • Supporting additional duties and responsibilities as the Service Department and role continue to grow.

What You Bring

We're looking for a practical, versatile construction professional who enjoys solving problems and taking ownership. You are as comfortable speaking with a homeowner and preparing a clear estimate as you are organizing materials and completing high-quality work on site.

  • Journeyman Carpenter Certification; or equivalent broad renovation experience will be considered with proven experience in residential carpentry, renovation, repair, maintenance, or small-project construction with a strong knowledge of applicable building codes.
  • Broad hands-on knowledge across multiple phases of residential construction, with the judgment to know when a licensed or specialized trade is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess site conditions, define scope, estimate labour and materials, and plan small jobs accurately.
  • Able to work independently, take initiative, make sound decisions, and ask for support when the scope or risk requires escalation.
  • Excellent customer communication skills; able to listen carefully, explain options in plain language, set realistic expectations, and handle concerns professionally.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills, with the ability to manage an independent schedule and several jobs at different stages.
  • Strong attention to detail in measurements, estimating, documentation, site protection, and finished workmanship.
  • Comfortable coordinating employees, suppliers, and sub-trades while remaining accountable for the overall customer experience and job outcome.
  • Professional, respectful, calm, and solution-focused in occupied homes and customer-facing situations.
  • Comfortable using email, scheduling, estimating, photo-documentation, and construction-management technology.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and ability to travel regularly between customer sites and suppliers.

Working Conditions
This position involves hands-on work in both interior and exterior residential construction environments. Team members must be comfortable working in variable conditions and adapting to the physical demands of a dynamic job site.

  • Work takes place on residential renovation and custom home build sites
  • Frequent and routine work at heights, including on ladders, scaffolding, and roofs
  • Exposure to all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow
  • Regular lifting of materials up to 50 lbs; occasional assisted lifts up to 75 lbs
  • Physically demanding tasks such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, crouching, and handling tools
  • Work may be performed in confined, elevated, dusty, or noisy environments
  • Regular use of power tools, hand tools, ladders, and scaffolding is expected
  • Appropriate PPE must be worn at all times (hard hat, safety boots, eye and ear protection)
  • Standard schedule: Monday to Friday, daytime hours
  • Minimal overtime and no overnight travel

What We Offer

We believe great people deserve great support. Here's what you can expect when you work with us:

  • Be part of an award-winning residential renovation company with over 40 years of success and a strong track record of continued growth.
  • Competitive compensation that reflects your skills and experience.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits through Sun Life.
  • Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • Life insurance.
  • Voluntary RRSP plan with company contributions.
  • Professional development, training, and career growth opportunities.
  • Positive, team-driven culture built on collaboration and respect.
  • Birthday, work anniversary, and milestone recognition.
  • Christmas holiday shutdown.
  • Team-building and social events.
  • Paid mileage between jobs.
  • Strong commitment to work-life balance with little to no overtime.
