The duties of the Chief Engineer include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Supervises and assists maintenance staff/contractors in the maintenance and repair of plumbing, hotel rooms, A/C and heating, ice machines, swimming pool, lighting, kitchen equipment, refrigeration, laundry, emergency generators, switch rooms, etc.
  • Ensures all maintenance and repairs are completed on a timely, cost-effective basis and according to specifications.
  • Orders necessary materials and tools for repairing equipment and keeps within budgetary guidelines.
  • Maintains an ongoing preventative maintenance program for the hotel.
  • Responsible for administering and documenting equipment preventative maintenance and guest room preventative maintenance.
  • Responsible for the safety of the department and the building.
  • Responds quickly to guest requests in a friendly manner. Follows up to ensure guest satisfaction.
  • Provides a professional image at all times through appearance and dress.
  • Follows company policies and procedures and is able to effectively communicate them to subordinates.
  • Aggressively recruits and staff's department using company hiring standards (i.e. behavioral questioning, reference checks, evaluations and team interviews). Reviews performances and assists in career development.
  • Conducts fire drills, training classes regarding safety, security, department procedures and service guidelines.
  • Ensures hotel is in compliance with all federal, provincial and local laws, including Health and Safety, ESA, Human Rights etc.
  • Ensures all fire and safety inspections are completed and any discrepancies are corrected.

COMPETENCIES WE ARE SEEKING:

  • 3+ years progressive maintenance experience in a supervisory role
  • High School diploma or equivalent is an asset
  • Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems
  • Effective communication and people management skills
  • Quick thinking and able to spot and resolve problems efficiently
  • Working knowledge of various computer software programs (MS Office, Micros, POS)
  • Ability to manage personnel and meet financial targets
  • Guest oriented and service minded with an attention to detail
  • Excellent planning and organizing skills
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work under pressure
  • Must be able to work independently and maintain a positive attitude within a busy environment ~ hours will fluctuate, must be able to work mornings, evenings, weekends, & holidays
