About the Organization

Next Hydrogen is a Canadian clean-energy technology company focused on advancing hydrogen production systems that support the global transition to a low-carbon economy. Operating in a highly regulated, safety-critical, and innovation-driven environment, Next Hydrogen is committed to operational excellence, robust quality systems, and continuous improvement across all functions.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Customer Solutions & Quality, the SHEQ Engineer will play an important role in maintaining and continuously improving Next Hydrogen's safety, health and quality programs.

This is a broad, hands-on role suited to an experienced quality professional who enjoys working across both the shop floor and technical systems. You will oversee product inspection and quality processes, lead nonconformance and corrective action activities, support our ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 management systems, and contribute to workplace health and safety initiatives.

You will also provide technical and day-to-day leadership to our QC Inspectors and work closely with Engineering, Operations, Supply Chain and Service to ensure our products and processes meet applicable quality, safety and customer requirements.

What You'll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Lead incoming, first article, in-process and final inspection activities, including reviewing technical documentation, witnessing Factory Acceptance Testing and releasing finished product.
  • Manage internal and supplier nonconformances, including NCRs, MRB disposition and Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCARs).
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) using methodologies such as 5-Why, fishbone and 8D.
  • Plan and conduct internal audits against ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, while supporting external registrar and customer audits.
  • Administer the calibration and measurement/test equipment program, including calibration recall, out-of-tolerance reviews and gauge R&R studies.
  • Maintain product traceability and accurate, audit-ready quality records.
  • Participate in the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC), including workplace inspections, hazard identification and incident, near-miss and work-refusal investigations.
  • Support the ongoing maintenance and improvement of quality and occupational health and safety policies, procedures and systems.
  • Respond to customer quality concerns, implementing containment, root cause analysis and corrective actions as required.
  • Supervise and support QC Inspectors by assigning priorities, providing technical guidance, reviewing inspection records, supporting training and managing day-to-day team administration.
  • Track and report key quality and safety metrics, open NCRs and CAPAs, audit findings and inspection activity to management.

What You Bring

We're looking for someone with a strong technical quality background who can confidently take ownership of a broad SHEQ portfolio. Ideally, you bring:

  • 5+ years of experience in a QA/QC or SHEQ role within a manufacturing environment; experience with pressure equipment, energy systems or another regulated industry is an asset.
  • Hands-on experience with incoming, first article, in-process and final inspection.
  • Experience leading root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions through to closure.
  • Experience with ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, including planning and conducting internal audits.
  • Experience administering calibration and measuring/test equipment programs.
  • Experience supervising or providing day-to-day leadership to a quality or inspection team.
  • The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, BOMs and Material Test Reports, with knowledge of GD&T.
  • Experience using measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers and gauges.
  • Strong technical writing, documentation and reporting skills.
  • Experience with ERP and PLM/quality management systems; EPICOR and Arena experience are considered assets.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities independently in a hands-on manufacturing environment.

Education & Certifications

A post-secondary degree or diploma in Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial or Materials Engineering, Engineering Technology, QA/QC, or a related discipline is preferred. Candidates with an OSSD combined with significant relevant experience and QA/QC certifications will also be considered.

The following certifications are considered assets:

  • ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE)
  • ASQ Certified Quality Auditor (CQA)
  • ISO 9001 and/or ISO 45001 Internal or Lead Auditor certification
  • JHSC Certification Part 1 and Part 2 under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act

Additional Requirements

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to supplier and customer sites, including domestic and international travel.
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment, including standing, stooping, occasional lifting and pushing/pulling carts as required.

Why Join Next Hydrogen?

This is an opportunity to take on a highly visible, hands-on role within a growing Canadian clean technology company. You'll work across quality, safety, engineering and operations, with the ability to directly influence how products and processes are developed, improved and delivered.

If you're someone who enjoys solving problems, building strong quality systems and working collaboratively to raise the bar for safety and product quality, we'd love to hear from you.
