We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Financial Controller to lead our accounting and financial reporting functions. This is a senior leadership position reporting directly to the company's Co-Presidents.

The successful candidate must understand construction accounting, project-based cash flow, progress billing, holdbacks, job costing and the financial demands of managing multiple large construction projects simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee the company's complete accounting and financial reporting functions.

• Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and management reports.

• Manage month-end and year-end closing procedures, reconciliations, accruals and adjusting entries.

• Prepare and maintain short-term and long-term cash-flow forecasts, including detailed projections of receivables, payables, payroll, union remittances and statutory obligations.

• Manage accounts receivable, accounts payable, collections, supplier-payment planning and working-capital requirements.

• Oversee construction progress billings, statutory holdbacks, change-order billing, job costing, committed costs and work-in-progress reporting.

• Monitor project profitability and provide ownership and project management with timely reporting on budgets, actual costs, forecasted costs and projected margins.

• Oversee weekly payroll, employee records, union reporting and union remittances for a large field workforce.

• Ensure the timely and accurate completion of HST filings, payroll remittances, WSIB reporting and other government obligations.

• Manage banking relationships, credit facilities, cash requirements, surety reporting, insurance documentation and financial information requested by lenders.

• Coordinate year-end financial reporting and tax requirements with the company's external accountants.

• Supervise, support and develop the accounting and administrative team.

• Establish and maintain effective internal financial controls, approval procedures and reporting standards.

• Improve accounting processes, reporting tools and financial systems as the company continues to grow.

• Work closely with project managers, estimators, purchasing personnel and field operations to ensure financial information is accurate and complete.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum seven years of progressive accounting and financial-management experience.

• Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller or senior accounting manager.

• Direct experience in construction, electrical contracting, mechanical contracting or another project-based contracting business is strongly preferred.

• Strong understanding of construction progress billing, holdbacks, change orders, job costing and work-in-progress reporting.

• Experience managing cash flow and working-capital requirements in a high-volume business.

• Strong knowledge of payroll, union remittances, HST, WSIB and general corporate compliance requirements.

• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and strong accounting-system proficiency.

• Experience with QuickBooks, Payworks or comparable accounting and payroll systems is an asset.

• CPA designation is strongly preferred; candidates with substantial relevant construction-accounting experience will also be considered.

• Excellent organizational, analytical and problem-solving abilities.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• High degree of accuracy, confidentiality, accountability and professional judgment.

• Ability to manage competing priorities and meet firm weekly and monthly deadlines.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a practical and proactive financial leader who is comfortable working directly with company ownership. This person will not simply report historical results—they will identify potential cash-flow issues, cost overruns and financial risks early and provide clear recommendations for addressing them.

The successful candidate will be comfortable operating in a fast-paced construction environment where priorities can change quickly and accurate, timely financial information is essential.
