We are seeking applicants who are passionate about wind engineering to join our Wind Effects - Buildings Team as a Wind Engineering Coordinator / E.I.T. in our Guelph office.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe role includes but is not limited to:
- Solving challenging problems related to wind engineering of high-rise buildings, long-span roofs, stadia, and other special structures in the built environment.
- Consulting with structural engineers, architects, and developers to help them achieve safe, optimized, and innovative structures.
- Coordinating with wind tunnel technicians, model builders, and CAD technicians to conduct physical simulations of wind effects in one of RWDI's boundary layer wind-tunnels.
- Interpreting and analyzing wind tunnel data to generate clear and concise recommendations related to wind design of the structure, façade, and/or building components (e.g., furniture, pavers, PV panels).
- Undertaking desk-based assessments based on interpretation of codes, technical literature, and experience (often database-assisted) to provide our clients timely guidance.
- Communicating engineering results and design recommendations that deliver effective and easy to understand solutions using a variety of vehicles from technical reports to live meetings.
- Co-ordinating with a diverse team to deliver top advice to our clients on time and on budget while working under the general supervision of senior staff with considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment.
Skills, Knowledge & ExpertiseWe are accepting applications from candidates with the following qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's level Engineering degree in Structural, Mechanical or Aerospace. A degree and/or background in Wind Engineering is an asset/preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of wind engineering concepts, bluff body aerodynamics, and/or structural dynamics.
- Knowledge of the design of structures, and/or knowledge and application of wind and snow sections of building codes (i.e., NBCC, ASCE-7).
- Experience with AutoCAD or similar environments.
- Experience with Excel/VBA automation and scientific computing using scripting language such as Python preferred.
- Strong communication skills.
- An aptitude for practical self-directed problem solving and proven ability to successfully meet deadlines.
