The Position:

The Instructional Designer (ID) serves as an expert in course design for various teaching modalities and works with faculty in the design of new courses, especially those using non-traditional instructional formats or modalities, and also in the modification of existing courses, all in light of overall institutional and program-specific goals and expectations. The ID will also work with other Instructional Designers to support the Senior Instructional Designer (SID) providing instructional support and training to faculty which focuses on technological tools used in instruction.

  • Position Type: Full Time, Replacement role

Responsibilities:

At the direction of the SID, the ID will blend collaboration, technical expertise, and ongoing professional development.

Course Creation & Redesign Support (80%)

  • Collaborate with faculty and subject-matter experts (SMEs) to develop and facilitate online academic and non-academic courses across various levels (certificate, diploma, undergraduate, graduate).
  • Ensure course compliance with institutional standards, including accessibility requirements and student/instructor workload expectations.
  • Ensure that online content meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)
  • Utilize SME expertise and materials to create engaging, multimedia course content suitable for various delivery methods (in-person, synchronous hybrid, hyflex, asynchronous online, etc.).
  • Assist faculty in implementing curriculum redesigns as requested, with a focus on technical and technological design aspects, in collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning.
  • Analyze student assessments and feedback in partnership with faculty to improve course quality, when requested by faculty, their supervisors, or the Director of Teaching and Learning.

Instructional Technology Training & Support (15%)

  • Provide instructional support and training to individuals and groups, in collaboration with the SID
  • Deliver training on LMS usage, both basic and advanced, along with best practices for implementation.
  • Assist faculty with the creation of video content in either of Redeemer's instructional design video recording studios.
  • Advise on compliance with institutional requirements for accessibility and other course-material standards.
  • Introduce emerging technologies and support the exploration of new learning theories and practices.

Professional Practice and Development (5%)

  • Stay updated on advances in instructional design, learning theories, and educational technologies.
  • Evaluate new practices and technologies for their applicability to Redeemer University's academic programs and incorporate them into course development when appropriate.

The Instructional Designer (ID) communicates regularly with:

  • Faculty: Collaborates with faculty to translate course content and outcomes into effective courses, offering instructional design expertise while navigating the challenges of faculty input and sometimes resistance.
  • Director of Teaching and Learning (DOTL): At the instruction of the SID, works closely with the DOTL to ensure smooth project coordination, dividing responsibilities, and sharing updates on instructional development.
  • IT Staff: Supports IT in backend technical aspects of learning management systems (LMS) and technologies related to teaching and learning, providing guidance on system features and handling faculty requests.

  • Effectively balance and prioritize multiple responsibilities.
  • Collect, analyze, and report data to guide decisions on learning technologies.
  • Coaching skills will be essential for guiding faculty through creative processes, with potential for professional development.
  • Excel in both written and verbal communication, adapting to different audiences.

Other Requirements:

  • Understanding of Redeemer University (mission, values, and Reformed Christian identity)

Education/Training:

  • A Master's degree or a relevant undergraduate/graduate degree (such as in education, instructional design, educational technology, etc.) is required, ideally with coursework in curriculum development or learning theory.
  • The candidate should have credibility with faculty, experience in university programs and course design, and familiarity with different instructional approaches and learning theories.
  • Certification and/or training in video editing practices and/or related software, graphic design, or similar. Able to perform some of the videography after-shot work necessary for course content efficiently.
  • Preferred qualifications include at least three years of instructional design experience, certification in learning management software (like Moodle), and knowledge of basic HTML.

Compensation: Salary Range: $57,529 - 79,424

Position Reports to: Senior Instructional Designer
