Job Description:

Reporting to the Maintenance and Engineering Manager, the Automation Technician's duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Troubleshoot and maintain existing critical process control systems utilizing PLCs, HMIs, and other intelligent electronic devices.
  • Maintain, develop, and improve control concepts, program design, and instrumentation/operator interfaces.
  • Design, develop, and implement upgrades and enhancements to existing process control systems.
  • Understand the processes and technology involved in melting, refining, casting, and pouring steel, and apply appropriate solutions to maximize operational efficiencies.
  • Work effectively with hourly trades, production workers, and management.
  • Provide on-call response to high-priority issues; occasional after-hours commissioning of new control systems may be required.

Qualifications and Attributes:

  • Experience in PLC and HMI programming, including Allen Bradley, ControlLogix / RSLogix, Siemens, Wonderware, and FactoryTalk.
  • Electrician license (309A or 442A) or PLC certification is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of automated systems with a solid understanding of industrial control systems applications, design, and operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Office, Access, PCS/SCADA, and experience with computer-assisted design, manufacturing, and machining.
  • Experience with communication protocols (e.g., Remote I/O, Modbus over TCP/IP) and basic knowledge of networking, Ethernet connections, and TCP/IP protocol.
  • General knowledge of VFD drives and motors.
  • Strong communication skills and proven ability to problem-solve under pressure.
  • Willingness to work in a fast-paced, lean environment where adaptability, innovation, and hard work are highly valued.
  • Experience developing and configuring PC-based relational databases, SQL data transfer, and reporting tools in MS Access is an asset.
