Reporting to the Senior Marine Manager, this role oversees a fleet of 8 vessels (passenger and tugboats) and approximately 50 crew members, leveraging fleet and crew capabilities to meet customer requirements. Responsibilities include coordinating crew change schedules, vessel availability, and facility logistics across BMT's operating areas in the Lower Mainland and Kitimat, BC.

Key Responsibilities

Fleet & Vessel Operations

  • Coordinate day-to-day vessel operations and respond to operational requirements as they arise, including scheduling changes and customer requests.
  • Plan and manage crew change logistics, including timing, location, and transport/accommodation needs.
  • Track and manage the planned maintenance system (PMS) for all vessels, coordinating with technical/engineering resources for repairs beyond minor scope.
  • Troubleshoot and carry out minor repairs on small engines and generators as required.

Crew Leadership & Development

  • Supervise and support crew, providing coaching and on-the-job training in proper vessel operation, maintenance, and safety procedures.
  • Ensure crew are skilled, qualified, and current on required certifications and safety training.
  • Coordinate crew training sessions, toolbox talks, and compliance audits.

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with Transport Canada marine safety regulations and BMT's Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Uphold HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, Environment) standards across all marine operations, and lead or support incident investigations as needed.
  • Maintain accurate vessel logs, permits, and records of vessel movements, weather conditions, and marine incidents.

Administration & Reporting

  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly operational and compliance reports for the Senior Marine Manager.
  • Support operational budgeting, invoicing, and procurement activities.
  • Coordinate operational meetings and provide general administrative support to the marine operations team.

Qualifications

Education

  • Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Logistics, Port Operations, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in marine operations, coordination, or administration.
  • Sea-going experience as a deckhand or Engine Room Assistant (ERA) required; experience sailing as a licensed deck or engineering officer is a strong asset.
  • Working knowledge of port operations, marine logistics, and Transport Canada safety regulations.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate.
  • Domestic Vessel Safety (DVS) certificate
  • Transport Canada Certificate of Competency (e.g., Master Limited / Watchkeeping Mate or equivalent) an asset, depending on vessel class.
  • Valid BC driver's license

Skills & Work Conditions

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and marine operations/scheduling software.
  • Strong organizational, coordination, and multitasking abilities with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, in a 24/7 operating environment.
  • Willing and able to travel to Kitimat, BC (up to approximately 15% of the time).
  • This is a safety-sensitive position: successful completion of pre-employment and, where applicable, random drug and alcohol testing is required in accordance with company policy.
