Our client is an established General Contractor based in Barrie, Ontario, delivering a diverse range of construction projects throughout the region.
Their portfolio includes commercial, institutional, industrial, and multi-residential construction, ranging from smaller renovation and addition projects to larger and more complex projects valued at $30M+. With multiple projects in various stages of development, they are looking to add an Intermediate Estimator to their team.
Position OverviewThe Intermediate Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates and tenders for a variety of construction projects.
Working closely with the Senior Estimator, Project Managers, subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, and clients, the Estimator will play an important role in developing project budgets, analyzing tender documents, obtaining competitive pricing, and supporting the company's business development efforts.
The ideal candidate has solid estimating experience with a General Contractor and is comfortable working across multiple project types and values.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare detailed estimates for commercial, institutional, industrial, and multi-residential construction projects.
- Review and interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for labour, materials, equipment, and subcontracted work.
- Prepare competitive bids and project budgets from conceptual design through tender.
- Solicit, receive, and analyze quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Prepare bid packages and distribute tender documents to subcontractors and suppliers.
- Compare subcontractor quotations and identify scope gaps, exclusions, qualifications, and discrepancies.
- Review tender addenda and incorporate changes into estimates.
- Develop detailed cost breakdowns, including labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, general conditions, allowances, and contingencies.
- Identify potential risks, constructability issues, and cost-saving opportunities.
- Communicate with subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, and clients to clarify scope and obtain pricing.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date estimating documentation.
- Prepare bid summaries and present estimates to senior management.
- Assist with value engineering and alternative construction solutions.
- Maintain historical cost data and pricing databases.
- Monitor market conditions, material costs, labour rates, and subcontractor pricing.
- Assist with the handover of successful bids to the Project Management team.
- Support the Senior Estimator and Estimating Manager with multiple tenders and pricing assignments.
- 3–7 years of experience in construction estimating.
- Experience working for a General Contractor is strongly preferred.
- Experience estimating commercial, institutional, industrial, and/or multi-residential projects.
- Experience with projects ranging from approximately $150K to $30M+ is an asset.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, sequencing, and costs.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Strong quantity takeoff and cost-estimating skills.
- Experience soliciting and analyzing subcontractor and supplier quotations.
- Strong knowledge of the Ontario construction market.
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Experience with estimating/takeoff software such as Bluebeam, On-Screen Takeoff, Planswift, or similar is an asset.
- Post-secondary education in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architectural Technology, or a related field is preferred.
