Firmware Developer

Our client is a fast-growing industrial IoT company scaling across North America. They build rugged wireless sensors and an end-to-end data platform that brings real-time visibility, route optimization, and loss prevention to heavy commercial and industrial supply chains.

They are looking for a hands-on Firmware Developer based in Calgary to take end-to-end ownership of the embedded software powering their physical devices. Reporting directly to the CTO, this is a high-impact role for an engineer who excels at balancing device reliability with continuous feature delivery, working right at the intersection of hardware, cellular connectivity, and real-world field conditions.

What You'll Do

Firmware Ownership & Feature Delivery

  • Maintain and extend production firmware across deployed devices, ensuring high field reliability while delivering new features aligned with the product roadmap.
  • Own the firmware lifecycle, including version control, release processes, and troubleshooting issues identified on active devices in the field.

Hardware Integration & Connectivity

  • Bring up and integrate new hardware revisions, components, and sensors, working directly alongside hardware engineers to validate designs against schematics and datasheets.
  • Own the LTE-M cellular stack, optimizing network registration, power-saving modes, and AT command protocols to maintain reliable connectivity.

Testing, Validation & Architecture

  • Design and execute rigorous test plans from bench-level validation through to field testing and regression suite management.
  • Balance sensing, compute, and connectivity tasks to maximize performance while respecting strict power management constraints on battery-powered hardware.

Cross-Functional Alignment

  • Partner closely with the CTO and engineering team to translate product requirements into firmware deliverables and surface hardware or firmware trade-offs early.

What You'll Bring

  • Strong hands-on experience developing C firmware, ideally in bare-metal environments on microcontrollers such as the STM32 architecture.
  • Practical experience with cellular IoT protocols (LTE-M or similar).
  • Ability to debug at the hardware/firmware boundary using toolsets like JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and schematic analysis.
  • Proven track record of designing test plans and validating embedded systems for physical, real-world environments.
  • Experience managing power profiles on battery-constrained hardware.
  • Full-lifecycle firmware ownership, including version control, release management, and support for deployed devices.
  • Located in or willing to work on-site in Calgary, AB.

This is an opportunity to take complete ownership of the firmware running across a rapidly growing fleet of industrial IoT devices, working closely with technical leadership to shape the future hardware platform as the business scales across North America.
