Position Overview

Southpointe Academy is seeking an experienced Educational Assistant with specialized training and experience in behavioural support, communication, and inclusive education to provide individualized and small-group support to students with diverse learning needs, including students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), and other exceptionalities.

Working collaboratively with classroom teachers, Student Support Teachers, administrators, and families, the successful candidate will help create an inclusive learning environment that promotes student independence, engagement, social-emotional development, and academic success. The Educational Assistant will support students both within the classroom and, when appropriate, in small-group or one-to-one settings while fostering dignity, belonging, and student agency.

The ideal candidate demonstrates flexibility, strong interpersonal skills, excellent communication, and a commitment to building positive relationships with students while implementing evidence-based strategies that support behavioural, academic, and social growth. They will be an active member of a collaborative team dedicated to ensuring all students can thrive in an inclusive IB learning environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

*These may include, but are not limited to…

  • Interacts one-to-one with students with learning and functional communication challenges, including students with diagnosed learning challenges;
  • Assists teachers in the planning, development, accommodation, and implementation of curriculum, classroom materials and schedules to meet the needs of designated student(s);
  • Assists teachers in the planning and implementation of individualized and/or group behaviour programs in specialized or integrated settings, such as regular or resource classrooms;
  • Reinforces concepts introduced by teachers and implements instructional programs designed by teachers;
  • Participates in the design and implementation of appropriate behaviour management strategies and provides assistance with monitoring and reinforcement;
  • Participates in the design and implementation of appropriate strategies to foster communication (speaking) skills and provides assistance with monitoring and reinforcement;
  • Maintains regular communications with teachers and other school-based team members;
  • Observes and records student progress, maintains detailed written records as required;
  • Supervises student(s) both on and off the school campus as required;
  • Operates standard school and office equipment, including personal computer applications, instructional aid communications, and special individualized equipment;
  • May carry out emergency procedures;
  • Remains current with changing technology, practices and equipment;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a post-secondary Educational Assistant program and/or ABA training;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills;
  • Proven ability to implement behaviour management techniques as well as flexibility in response to student behaviours (e.g. adjusting and adapting strategies);
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively while following the direction and guidance of classroom/resource teacher(s);
  • Ability to operate a variety of office and school equipment, including equipment specific to the needs of the student(s);
  • Ability to use judgment when providing information;
  • Physically capable of performing the duties of the position;
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training in conflict resolution and non-violent crisis intervention or equivalent combination of training and experience;
  • 1 year of recent experience specific to the needs of the student(s) with communication challenges, anxiety, behavioural problems, or pervasive developmental disorders is an asset;
  • Knowledge and understanding of the IB MYP and DP curricula.

Hours of Work:

  • 8:15 am - 3:15 pm daily when students are in attendance.

Salary and Benefits:

  • As per Collective Agreement: $35.30
