Xradar BC is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer experienced in manufacturing and production engineering wanting to further their careers and grow with our passionate and forward-thinking team. We take pride in our commitment to innovation and excellence and are currently developing new technologies to excel at our complex and challenging projects.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer with Xradar BC, you will play a critical role in a dynamic and innovative R&D team, helping to design and develop novel geophysical equipment. You will have significant flexibility and latitude in your role, directly driving critical design decisions, and will need to be self-motivated and capable of working independently. This is an excellent opportunity to expand your design and product development skills in a grass-roots R&D environment where your input and contribution will be strongly valued, and where you can see your ideas materialized and put into action.

As our Mechanical Design Engineer, your day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with researchers and electronic engineers to design and fabricate housings, fixtures, and assemblies which are ergonomic and robust enough to withstand harsh industrial environments.
  • Design housings and mechanical fixtures in CAD
  • Apply DFM (Design for Manufacturing) rules for manufacturability with standard technologies (e.g., injection molding, CNC milling, etc.)
  • Prototype designs using rapid prototyping tools like 3D printing
  • Collaborate with researchers and electronic engineers to integrate features and components
  • Conduct design reviews and iterate based on feedback
  • Conduct QA / QC on components and assemblies
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards and regulations

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or a related field
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Fusion 360, SolidWorks, FreeCAD, etc.)
  • Knowledge of DFM (Design for Manufacture) and DFA (Design for Assembly) principles
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools (e.g., 3D printers, CNC machines)
  • Understanding of material properties and manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of IP (Ingress Protection) standards
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills

Preferred Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical design, product development and manufacturing
  • Experience preparing products for mass production, including production release, supplier engagement, and outsourcing the manufacture of mechanical components
  • Background in the design and development of electronic enclosures and RF shielding is a plus
  • Knowledge of FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and other simulation tools is a plus
  • Familiarity with ISO 9000 standards is a plus

During the interview process, we will be looking for:

  • How you demonstrate our shared value set of excellence (pushing yourself to be the very best), innovation (your ability to try new things and be okay with failing), community (how you give to your community, either micro or macro), and honesty (how you own your mistakes, even if it might mean you don't always look as good as you hoped!)
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills: your ability to communicate with all levels of an organization with a positive, proactive attitude. This includes understanding how to read a room and meet the needs of the team!
  • Examples of excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills through asking good questions and completing solid analysis
  • Examples of your ability to work independently and autonomously, as well as collaboratively across several teams
  • Knowledge of manufacturing, prototyping and production in mechanical engineering
  • Your technical instinct and expertise
  • Ethical and honest in approach
  • Able to convey excellent project, technical and leadership skills

What's in it for you:

  • Competitive compensation package, with a starting salary commensurate with experience
  • Customizable benefits package including medical, dental, vision care, and RRSP options
  • Paid sick days to care for you or your immediate family
  • Structured training program where you'll become familiarized with the industry methodologies
  • Company holidays: we often go camping in the summer and skiing in the winter!

To Apply:

Please submit your resume and cover letter online (ideally, in one document!). While we thank all candidates who apply, only those deemed qualified by the hiring manager will be contacted.
