Construction Project Director
Location: Calgary, Alberta
Salary: $150k-$180k
Position Summary:
We're partnering with an established general contractor to recruit a Commercial Project Director to provide senior leadership across commercial construction projects from preconstruction through closeout.
This role combines project oversight, team leadership, client management, financial accountability, and business development. You'll guide project teams delivering work valued at $30 million and above, protect project margins, strengthen client relationships, and help shape the contractor's commercial construction strategy.
The successful candidate will bring at least 15 years of general construction experience, strong commercial judgment, and the credibility to lead project teams, clients, consultants, and trade partners through complex decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide executive oversight for commercial construction projects from pursuit and preconstruction through execution and closeout
- Establish project leadership structures, staffing plans, resources, responsibilities, and performance expectations
- Lead, coach, and mentor project management personnel while supporting career development, training, performance reviews, and succession planning
- Guide estimating, budgeting, procurement, constructability reviews, bid strategy, and other preconstruction services
- Challenge project teams to develop value-based design and construction solutions
- Review project proposals, contracts, subcontract agreements, schedules, risk registers, and execution plans
- Ensure project teams understand contractual obligations, scope requirements, commercial exposure, and key milestones
- Monitor project performance against schedule, budget, safety, quality, and client commitments
- Ensure project management systems, documentation standards, procurement processes, and internal controls are consistently followed
- Review project forecasts, cost-to-complete reports, billing, cash flow, and third-party costs to protect or exceed target margins
- Identify project risks early and direct practical mitigation, recovery, or escalation strategies
- Ensure project closeout is completed within agreed timelines and to the client's satisfaction
- Lead post-project reviews and translate lessons learned into measurable operational improvements
- Build strong relationships with clients, consultants, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders
- Maintain regular client communication, manage expectations, and resolve project concerns before they become commercial problems
- Support business development by contributing construction methodology, site analysis, risk assessment, and project delivery strategies
- Help pursue new work within existing and prospective client relationships
- Monitor market conditions, competition, economic influences, and industry developments to inform business decisions
- Represent the organization within the construction market and maintain a strong professional network
- Contribute to annual operational planning and departmental budgeting
- Establish a proactive safety culture and ensure compliance with applicable occupational health and safety requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
- 15+ years of project management experience in general construction
- Proven experience leading commercial construction projects valued at $30 million or more
- Previous experience in a senior supervisory, management, or project leadership position is preferred
- Degree or diploma in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related discipline
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, contracts, procurement, project controls, and delivery models
- Demonstrated experience managing project budgets, forecasts, schedules, risks, subcontractors, and client relationships
- Experience leading multidisciplinary project teams across preconstruction and active construction
- Proficiency with Procore, Microsoft Project, Bluebeam, Autodesk, or comparable construction technology
