The Council for Advancement of African Canadians in Alberta, operating as Africa Centre, is the largest pan African organization in western Canada, serving as a community hub that provides programs and services from a place of cultural awareness and competency to the families in our diverse community.

We are currently seeking a Financial Analyst to contribute to the success of the overall organization. This position reports directly to the Finance Director and has responsibility for supporting the finance issues of the organization.

The candidate in this position will handle key decisions and challenges, working with all members of the team. As a leader, you will encourage innovative ideas that are sound and progressive, challenge the status quo, and support creativity in your area of responsibility.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  1. Assist the Finance Director in the preparation of the annual corporate budget forpresentation to the Executive Director, then the Board of Directors for approval.
  1. Prepare quarterly salary and hourly breakdowns by programs and grants for government reports.to post the salary journals to SAGE Intacct.
  2. Facilitate and/or prepare numerous annual budgets, year-end and other periodic reports as required bymajor funding sources for senior management review; identify financial requirements associated with each grant to ensure compliance is possible.
  3. Ensure all reporting deadlines (annual, semi-annual, quarterly, monthly) as required byour various grantors are met; external audits for a variety of special reports are arranged on a timely basis and reports requiring board approval are prepared in time to meet grantor deadlines.
  4. Evaluate financial impact with respect to funding increases/decreases for review by theFinance Manager and the Director of Finance.
  5. Enter payments in the SAGE Intacct and EFT Bank payments.
  1. Prepare financial projections with respect to corporate and/or program restructuringproposals in collaboration with the Director of Finance, Managers and/or Program Directors.
  2. Review every operating budget monthly comparing actual performance tobudget and analyses variances and identify and escalate problem areas.
  3. Assist in the preparation of a quarterly financial forecast and year end reports forexternal audit purposes.
  4. Balance all the Funds to generate a financial statement which is in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
  5. Prepare Charity Information Returns required by the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency
  6. Act as a backfill to the Finance Director and HR position as necessary regarding the payroll processing
  7. Carrying out monthly bank and ledger reconciliations.
  8. Paying vendors, expense claims and invoicing receivables when necessary.
  9. Preparing for CASINO sessions
  10. Supervising the Bookkeeper and any accounting staff below you.
  11. Any other duty as may be requested by the supervisor.

Education & Experience

  • Completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma in commerce, finance, or businessadministration. Enrollment in a program leading to a recognized accounting designation (CMA, CGA, or CA) is an added asset. Experience in budgeting and forecasting. Proficiency in using spreadsheet and word-processing applications; particularly MS Office Applications.
  • Knowledge of SAGE Intacct software application an asset.
  • Excellent analytical skills required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
  • Excellent Time Management Skills deadline oriented.
  • Experience or interest in working within a non-profit social services environment.
  • Understanding of cultural competency and anti-oppression framework.
  • Reflective of a multi-barriered group, as serviced by the program, a strong asset.
  • Experience in Grant Accounting and deferred revenue is an added asset
  • Experience in NFP organizations is an added asset.
