The role centres on detailed I&C design, including control system deliverables such as I/O lists, instrument and I/O datasheets, control narratives, loop and wiring drawings, and panel layouts, along with programming, configuring, and commissioning PLC, DCS, and HMI and SCADA systems. You will interpret design drawings, submittals, and specifications to develop, program, and test sequences of operation, applying independent problem-solving and sound engineering judgment within established procedures. Work is self-directed within scope and reviewed to ensure soundness of approach.What You'll Do
- Perform detailed I&C design on industrial projects, including control narratives, I/O architecture, loop and instrument design, panel layouts, cable schedules, and instrument indices.
- Develop control system design deliverables, including I/O lists, instrument and I/O datasheets, control narratives, and sequence-of-operation specifications.
- Design, program, and configure PLCs, DCSs, and HMI applications, and create and test sequences of operation for processes of moderate complexity.
- Set up and maintain industrial networks, including Ethernet and fieldbus systems.
- Participate in the testing, commissioning, and startup of automation systems, including point-to-point, pre-functional, and functional testing, with FAT and SAT support.
- Develop and issue commissioning and startup plans and check sheets, and perform system startups, network connections, and field troubleshooting.
- Troubleshoot and maintain clients' existing automation systems, and create or modify graphics interfaces as required.
- Coordinate I&C design with the electrical, process, and mechanical disciplines to deliver integrated, constructible solutions.
- Evaluate vendor submittals, support technical bid evaluation, and provide technical input to proposals and project scoping.
- Perform site-specific PLC and operator training for owners and operators.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with QA procedures, and help assess, plan, and implement standards, tools, and processes within the discipline.
- BSc in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with EGBC, or registered with APEGA and able to register with EGBC. Registration is required for this role.
- 5 to 8 years of broad-based instrumentation and controls and control systems engineering experience designing and programming PLC and DCS systems to control industrial processes.
- Demonstrated history designing PLC and DCS systems and producing the associated engineering deliverables, including I/O lists, instrument and I/O datasheets, control narratives, loop and wiring drawings, and panel design.
- Proven experience setting up industrial networks, with a strong understanding of industrial communication protocols.
- Hands-on testing, commissioning, and startup experience on industrial systems.
- Sector exposure in one or more of: oil and gas and midstream, water and wastewater, pulp and paper, or similar heavy-industrial facilities.
- Hands-on design and programming experience with one or more PLC platforms, such as Rockwell and Allen-Bradley (ControlLogix, CompactLogix, SLC) and Schneider Modicon (M340 and M580), using Ladder Logic, Structured Text, and Function Block Diagram.
- SCADA and HMI development experience, such as VTScada, Ignition, or FactoryTalk View, including panel HMIs such as PanelView and QuickPanel.
- Strong command of industrial networks and protocols, including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP and RTU, PROFINET, and OPC.
- Working knowledge of the codes and standards governing I&C design in Canada, including the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1) and applicable ISA standards (ISA-5.1, ISA-88/95, ISA-18.2 alarm management, ISA-101 HMI).
- Familiarity with hazardous-area classification (Class I, Division 1 or 2, or Zone) and awareness of IEC 61511 and 61508 functional safety principles.
- MSc in a related engineering field.
- Programming experience with Emerson platforms (RX3i and PACSystems, VersaMax) and SCADAPACK.
- DCS experience on a platform such as Honeywell Experion, DeltaV, or ABB 800xA.
- Configuration and commissioning of variable frequency drives, such as ABB or Schneider Altivar.
- Functional safety exposure (SIS and SIF), with applied knowledge of IEC 61511 and 61508.
- Experience with database-driven E&I design tools.
- Current field safety certifications for site and commissioning work, such as H2S Alive, CSTS or PCST, ground disturbance, confined space, and standard first aid.
- Niche depth in burner management systems, or data-centre and critical-facility controls.
- Based in Calgary, AB or Vancouver, BC, with remote flexibility.
- Travel to client and project sites is required, sometimes on short notice, typically around 10% of the time, and may involve field, plant, and commissioning environments for short periods.
- Occasional schedule flexibility is required around project and commissioning deadlines.
- A strong safety culture is expected, with safety integrated into design and commissioning decisions and full compliance with applicable HSE requirements and client site procedures.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Must be able to pass client-required background checks and security screening, which may be a condition of assignment on certain projects, such as critical-infrastructure and data-centre work.
- Valid driver's license and the ability to travel to client and project sites as required.
