Job Description: Project Engineer
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Director of Manufacturing, the Project Engineer is a “hands-on" role that provides leadership and supervision in support of a food manufacturing operation. This position serves as the key technical resource for the manufacturing operation, focusing on preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and problem resolution for electronic/mechanical equipment issues.
Core Deliverables:
- Ensure safe, efficient, reliable maintenance and operation of equipment to ensure the production of quality products to maintain a continuous 24/7 plant manufacturing operation.
- Planning and execution of the preventative maintenance programs.
- Improve the reliability of the equipment.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts using lean manufacturing principles.
- Work with vendors to source parts and to substitute parts as required to improve efficiency, update older equipment no longer supported by manufacturers, and improve equipment functionality.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and direction to shift mechanics in all aspects of their work.
- Serve as a key resource for safety-related issues with the goal of meeting/exceeding OSHA requirements for a safe workplace.
- Manage capital projects including identifying scope, cost, milestones, etc.
- Coordinate a comprehensive and responsive maintenance and breakdown recovery service across the range of production plant and equipment on the manufacturing site, including:
- Driers, Chillers, and Conveyors.
- Mixers.
- Coding and Labelling systems.
- Case erector and sealing machines.
- Silo system.
- Boilers and steam service equipment.
- Water and Air services.
- Ventilation.
Key Deliverables and Responsibilities:
- Implement upgrades to the current maintenance program, including transition to a new ERP system.
- Manage requirements for early starts, late finishes, and weekend work to gain access to equipment.
- Suggest and carry out improvements to plant and machinery, as directed, to improve efficiency, minimize downtime, and make machines safer and/or easier to operate.
- Provide engineering expertise and knowledge when required by operators, Team Leaders, Supervisors, and Managers.
- Ensure all planned maintenance is carried out.
- Learn to operate and run all machinery and resolve long-term machine problems.
- Coordinate with the maintenance team and machine suppliers to resolve breakdown issues.
- Self-motivated and continuously monitor plant, equipment, and products. Liaise with other members of the production and engineering team to reduce cost, breakdowns, and wastage.
- Assist in commissioning and setup of new machinery.
- Oversee maintenance staff and suppliers of services and equipment to achieve a measurable contribution in reduction of breakdown times and increase efficiency through quick and timely response to call-outs.
Qualifications/Experience:
- A minimum of 2-4 years of maintenance experience.
- Previous experience in a similar industry or organization is essential.
- High energy, hands-on.
- Proven record of successfully managing and executing multiple projects while meeting quality, timeline, and budgetary objectives.
- Able to take the initiative to make recommendations and produce results.
- Experience in packing and manufacturing machinery and methods.
- Good communication skills.
