Job Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced and collaborative Accounting Manager to lead the day-to-day operations of our accounting department and oversee project accounting staff. This role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial processes, supporting project teams, managing compliance requirements, and developing a high-performing accounting team. The successful candidate will bring strong leadership skills, sound financial judgment, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced construction environment.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment by developing finance team capabilities through training, coaching, and mentoring initiatives.

  • Provide leadership and direction to accountants and related team members, delivering timely performance feedback and supporting the annual performance evaluation process through talent management systems.

  • Review contractual agreements and participate in project kickoff meetings to ensure compliance with contract terms and financial requirements.

  • Oversee the accounts receivable function, ensuring accurate invoicing and timely collection of outstanding balances.

  • Analyze monthly cash position reports, verify the accuracy of over/under billings and ensure alignment of cash management strategies between finance and operations teams.

  • Review and validate hourly, part-time, overtime, and bi-weekly payroll timesheet submissions to ensure completeness and accuracy.

  • Address and resolve day-to-day project-related financial issues, including subcontractor disputes, escalating matters to senior finance leadership when necessary.

  • Review special payment requests to ensure supporting documentation is complete and compliant prior to approval.

  • Resolve local tax compliance matters, including sales and use tax reporting requirements.

  • Ensure preconstruction costs are accurately transferred and allocated to project job costs.

  • Verify that billing documentation and supporting proofs are complete, accurate, and compliant with company standards.

  • Manage and coordinate monthly and quarterly departmental audits to ensure adherence to established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor and review reports prepared by accounting staff to ensure timely submission and accuracy.

  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of departmental and organizational objectives.

What You Must Have

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, including journal entries, general ledger management, and financial reporting.

  • Experience reviewing financial data, identifying trends, and recognizing discrepancies.

  • Knowledge of contract accounting and the financial implications of contract terms.

  • Understanding of cash flow management and financial risk mitigation.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, solve problems independently, and implement effective solutions.

  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office Suite, and financial management systems.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and commitment to teamwork.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Construction industry experience.

  • Previous experience leading or supervising a small accounting team.

  • Experience supporting project-based accounting environments.
