As a Project Accountant, you will support the ongoing and effective full-cycle accounting management of active construction projects while ensuring alignment with operational and contractual requirements. This role works closely with Project Managers to assess project costs, profitability, and overall performance, while also supporting monthly financial close processes across all Matheson companies.

Key ResponsibilitiesProject Accounting & Financial Management
  • Complete project set-up and close-out in accordance with established company processes.
  • Maintain and regularly report on project budgets and cash flow forecasts.
  • Conduct job cost analysis by reviewing project budget variances and performance metrics.
  • Identify reasons for variances, issues, and trends, and recommend corrective actions or mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare project-specific billing packages.
  • Perform full-cycle accounts receivable functions, including reconciliations and collections.
  • Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies and misapplied payments.
  • Enter accounts payable invoices into accounting software and process payments as required.
  • Collaborate with the Accounts Payable team to ensure project invoices are accurately coded, entered, and processed in a timely manner.
  • Allocate costs to jobs and departments for various expenses, including utilities and fuel accounts.
  • Allocate employee labour costs to projects on a weekly basis.
Month-End & Financial Reporting
  • Assist with month-end close activities, including:
    • Job cost accruals
    • General ledger reconciliations
    • Monthly journal entries
  • Accumulate, interpret, and analyze financial data for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis, research, and reporting to management as requested.
Project Support & Collaboration
  • Serve as a liaison between operational divisions and Project Managers, providing both financial and non-financial information to support project management activities.
  • Attend monthly project review meetings with Project Managers and Construction Managers.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and business unit leaders to ensure compliance with company accounting policies, financial procedures, and project contractual requirements.
Audit & Administrative Support
  • Coordinate year-end audit file preparation and support external auditors during regulatory and financial audits.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, forms, and specialized documents as required.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary to support departmental and company objectives.
QualificationsEducation & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree or College Diploma in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of relevant accounting experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Construction industry experience is considered a strong asset.
  • CPA designation preferred or currently in progress.
