What is the project?

The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment program involves designing and building a new deep-water intake in Lake Ontario to improve the plant's cooling system. This will involve:

  • A5 km-long tunnel, built by a pressurized TBM (10.15 m diameter slurry TBM);
  • Two vertical shafts (onshore and offshore);
  • An offshore modular intake structure, resting on the lake bed.

The project is distinguished by its proximity to an active nuclear site, requiring rigorous standards of safety, planning and coordination.

What you will do:

The Health & Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing and managing the H&S program while ensuring compliance with H&S legislation. They will conduct trainings for management and staff and provide recommendations on augmenting the performance of H&S initiatives and plans.

Concretely, your tasks will be:

  • Act in aleadingrole in the development,implementationand management oftheHealth & Safetyprogram
  • Ensure compliance withHealth & Safetylegislation,in collaboration withinternal and external stakeholders
  • Develop,refineandmaintainorganizational health and safety programs and strategies to prevent workplaceinjuries
  • Influence andassistcompanywide in the implementation ofHealth & Safetytraininginitiatives
  • Conduct and create training and communication for management and staff using internal and external resources on Health &Safety
  • Provide regular reporting and recommendations to senior management on health and safety statistics andperformance
  • Improve the level of excellence in the companysHealth & Safetyprograms andperformance
  • Identifyandanticipatehealth and safety concerns and hazards by surveying environmental, operational, and occupational conditions; investigates violations & recommends preventativeprograms
  • Coordinate facility audits and set auditstandards
  • Assistin the daily meetings to report all fieldincidents
  • Analyse the safety incidents and the environment ofconstruction
  • Propose improved methods ofconstruction
  • Organise regular emergency drills tomaintaina quick and efficient emergency response

Your skills:

  • Minimum of 15years experiencein the construction industry, preferably on large infrastructureprojects
  • Knowledge ofOntarioOccupational Health and SafetyRegulations
  • CORAuditor trainingis preferred
  • Strong communicationskills
  • Exhibit strong time managementskills
  • High attention to detail and proactive approach toproblem-solving
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of current health and safety legislation
  • Proven experience in tunneling or underground works, preferably with TBM operations
  • Familiarity with safety management systems and incident reportingtools
  • Experience working on projects with high-risk environments (nuclear, offshore, or similar)

The headquarter of VINCI Construction Grands Projets Canada is based in Montral, Qubec. We are currently involved in three major construction projects in Ontario valued at several billion Canadian dollars.

  • The construction of the subway line south in Toronto, involving a six-kilometer tunnel and associated excavation work. The project includes the design, construction, and handover of all tunnels (twin tubes of 6 km each), 7 stations (turnkey for: 1 at-grade station and 6 underground stations) and civil engineering works.
  • Extension of the Confederation Line in Ottawa, one of the components of Phase 2 of the city's O-Train system, which includes the design, construction, and financing of 27.5 km of light rail infrastructure. The work also includes 4 kilometers of cut-and-cover tunnels, 20 engineering structures, 16 stations and a light maintenance facility.
