Position OverviewWe are seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Controller to join a growing finance team within a project-based professional services environment in North York. Reporting directly to the Controller, this role will play a key part in overseeing day-to-day accounting operations, supporting financial reporting, and leading a team of accounting professionals.
This position is ideal for a hands-on accounting leader who enjoys mentoring others, driving process improvements, and contributing to the strategic growth of an organization.
Salary: $95,000 - $115,000Key Responsibilities
  • Support the Controller in overseeing the organization's accounting and financial operations.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop members of the accounting team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Review and analyze financial statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Oversee project accounting activities, including project financial reporting, billing review, revenue recognition, and related accounting functions.
  • Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including journal entries, reconciliations, working papers, and financial analysis.
  • Monitor financial performance and provide insights to support operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Collaborate with project managers and business leaders to ensure accurate project financial reporting and profitability analysis.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and increased efficiencies across accounting and finance operations.
  • Support ERP and financial system optimization initiatives.
  • Prepare ad hoc reports, analyses, forecasts, and special projects as required.
  • Ensure confidentiality of financial and organizational information.
Qualifications
  • CPA designation preferred; candidates actively pursuing their CPA or able to demonstrate equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
  • Strong understanding of financial reporting, month-end close processes, and accounting principles.
  • Experience in project-based industries such as professional services, consulting, engineering, architecture, construction, or similar environments is considered an asset.
  • Project accounting experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint, Deltek Vision, or similar ERP systems is considered an asset.
