This is a field-based, relationship-driven sales role suited to a professional who thrives on building long-term partnerships and delivering value-added solutions to industrial clients.
The Role
Reporting to the Branch Manager, the Outside Technical Sales Representative is responsible for achieving territory sales targets through account management, new business development, and on-site customer engagement.
You will operate as a trusted advisor to customers, leveraging product knowledge and consultative selling to identify needs, present solutions, and close opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute a structured territory plan, conducting daily in-person customer visits (targeting ~5 per day)
- Manage and grow existing accounts while identifying and converting new business opportunities
- Develop strong customer relationships and establish deep "customer intimacy" within accounts
- Deliver product presentations, demonstrations, and technical recommendations on-site
- Prospect, qualify, and close new opportunities, including cold outreach where required
- Prepare quotes, negotiate pricing and terms, and manage the full sales cycle
- Maintain accurate CRM records, call reports, and pipeline activity
- Contribute to RFP responses and large account development initiatives
- Stay informed on product offerings, competitive activity, and market trends
- Build referral networks to support ongoing revenue growth
- 5+ years of external/field sales experience, ideally within industrial distribution, MRO, or technical products
- Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales quotas
- Strong consultative selling skills, including prospecting, needs analysis, and closing
- Experience managing complex sales involving multiple stakeholders
- Solid understanding of wholesale/industrial sales processes and territory management
- Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills
- Self-motivated with high energy and strong organizational discipline
- Experience using CRM systems
- Post-secondary education (or equivalent experience)
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel extensively within the territory
- Ability to travel internationally (primarily to the U.S.) for corporate meetings, vendor training, and trade shows
- Field-based role with significant travel (daily customer visits required)
- Exposure to industrial environments and varying weather conditions
- Occasional lifting (up to ~50 lbs)
