Lifeguard/Instructor IV - Regular full time

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of the Aquatic Supervisor, the Lifeguard/Instructor IV is responsible for leading the delivery of high-quality aquatic instruction, supervising staff, and supporting safe, efficient day-to-day aquatic operations. This position combines leadership, instructional, and operational responsibilities, including pool safety, program delivery, staff development, and facility oversight.

The Lifeguard/Instructor IV provides on-deck leadership and acts as a senior resource for aquatic staff. This position reports to the Aquatic Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

1. Lead and coordinate the daily activities of lifeguards and instructors to ensure a safe and positive environment for all patrons.
2. Oversee, deliver, and evaluate swim lesson programs and instructor courses, ensuring compliance with established instructional and safety standards.
3. Train, mentor, and support staff, promoting ongoing professional development and team cohesion.
4. Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of policies, procedures, and regulatory compliance.
5. Coordinate lesson scheduling, supplies, and program delivery to ensure efficient and effective operations.
6. Support the Aquatic Supervisor with scheduling, staff coverage, and team communication.
7. Support community engagement initiatives and promote aquatic programs and water safety education.
8. Deliver swimming lessons in accordance with recognized standards (e.g., Swim for Life or equivalent).
9. Provide advanced instruction for specialty programs (e.g., leadership courses, fitness programs, stroke development).
10. Perform daily pool testing, documentation, and water chemistry adjustments to maintain compliance with health regulations.
11. Assist with monitoring and basic inspection of pool mechanical systems, including filtration, chemical feed systems, and HVAC systems related to pool operations.
12. Assist in preventative maintenance, seasonal shutdown/startup, and routine facility inspections.
13. Identify and report facility hazards or mechanical concerns, taking appropriate action where required.
14. Maintain accurate operational logs to support regulatory compliance and audit requirements.
15. Perform and/or oversee cleaning and sanitation tasks, including pool surfaces, decks, and mechanical areas, to maintain a clean environment.
16. Maintain accurate administrative records, including chemical reports, daily and monthly maintenance logs, safety checklists, and SDS documentation.
17. Support the implementation and use of operational software systems (e.g., ClickMate).
18. Enforce pool rules and regulations, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
19. Act as a senior aquatic responder during incidents and emergencies.
20. Participate in the planning and delivery of in-service training sessions, including emergency scenario development.
21. Foster and promote a positive, safety-focused culture among aquatic staff.
22. Ensure safety signage and equipment are maintained and compliant; support the ongoing development and implementation of the facility's safety plan.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

1. Required certification in:
   • Valid Pool Operator Certificates Levels 1 and 2.
   • National Lifeguard (Pool Option)
   • Swim for Life Instructor Trainer
   • Transporting dangerous goods

1. Demonstrated knowledge of pool operations, safety standards, and emergency response procedures.
2. Previous supervisory or team lead experience is preferred.
3. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
4. Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including swimming, rescues, and maintenance duties.
5. Working knowledge of pool mechanical systems, with the ability to perform minor maintenance tasks.
6. Comprehensive knowledge of applicable pool regulations and operational procedures.
7. Understanding of pool chemicals, including safe handling, storage, and application.
8. Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
