DEFINITION:
Under the direction of the Aquatic Supervisor, the Lifeguard/Instructor IV is responsible for leading the delivery of high-quality aquatic instruction, supervising staff, and supporting safe, efficient day-to-day aquatic operations. This position combines leadership, instructional, and operational responsibilities, including pool safety, program delivery, staff development, and facility oversight.
The Lifeguard/Instructor IV provides on-deck leadership and acts as a senior resource for aquatic staff. This position reports to the Aquatic Supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
- Lead and coordinate the daily activities of lifeguards and instructors to ensure a safe and positive environment for all patrons.
- Oversee, deliver, and evaluate swim lesson programs and instructor courses, ensuring compliance with established instructional and safety standards.
- Train, mentor, and support staff, promoting ongoing professional development and team cohesion.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and monitoring of policies, procedures, and regulatory compliance.
- Coordinate lesson scheduling, supplies, and program delivery to ensure efficient and effective operations.
- Support the Aquatic Supervisor with scheduling, staff coverage, and team communication.
- Support community engagement initiatives and promote aquatic programs and water safety education.
- Deliver swimming lessons in accordance with recognized standards (e.g., Swim for Life or equivalent).
- Provide advanced instruction for specialty programs (e.g., leadership courses, fitness programs, stroke development).
- Perform daily pool testing, documentation, and water chemistry adjustments to maintain compliance with health regulations.
- Assist with monitoring and basic inspection of pool mechanical systems, including filtration, chemical feed systems, and HVAC systems related to pool operations.
- Assist in preventative maintenance, seasonal shutdown/startup, and routine facility inspections.
- Identify and report facility hazards or mechanical concerns, taking appropriate action where required.
- Maintain accurate operational logs to support regulatory compliance and audit requirements.
- Perform and/or oversee cleaning and sanitation tasks, including pool surfaces, decks, and mechanical areas, to maintain a clean environment.
- Maintain accurate administrative records, including chemical reports, daily and monthly maintenance logs, safety checklists, and SDS documentation.
- Support the implementation and use of operational software systems (e.g., ClickMate).
- Enforce pool rules and regulations, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
- Act as a senior aquatic responder during incidents and emergencies.
- Participate in the planning and delivery of in-service training sessions, including emergency scenario development.
- Foster and promote a positive, safety-focused culture among aquatic staff.
- Ensure safety signage and equipment are maintained and compliant; support the ongoing development and implementation of the facility's safety plan.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Required certification in:
- Valid Pool Operator Certificates Levels 1 and 2.
- National Lifeguard (Pool Option)
- Swim for Life Instructor Trainer
- Transporting dangerous goods
- Demonstrated knowledge of pool operations, safety standards, and emergency response procedures.
- Previous supervisory or team lead experience is preferred.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including swimming, rescues, and maintenance duties.
- Working knowledge of pool mechanical systems, with the ability to perform minor maintenance tasks.
- Comprehensive knowledge of applicable pool regulations and operational procedures.
- Understanding of pool chemicals, including safe handling, storage, and application.
- Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- This role requires continuous alertness, quick decision-making, and physical endurance in emergency situations.
