The Role

We are seeking an experienced Civil Superintendent to work outside of Fort McMurray, AB, at Kearl Oil sands in camp on a 14/14 rotation. Charter flights are provided from either Edmonton or Calgary with flight allowances based on the province located.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organize and coordinate the daily activities of all crew members, subcontractors, and equipment.
  • Manage the project as per OCL's Safety, Quality, and Environmental management plans and core values.
  • Managing the schedule and ensuring the project is on or under budget.
  • Provide daily and weekly reporting internally and externally.
  • Maintain regular contact with client representatives on contract issues, schedule, delivery, and technical issues.
  • Oversee estimates for the project scope of work, including labor, supplies, materials, and other costs.
  • Manage materials, tools, and equipment required for the project.
  • Oversight of construction worker task assignment and support of the field foreman.
  • Participate in site safety toolbox meetings.
  • Coordinate construction services and activities.
  • Manage billable hours, review, and approve timesheets.
  • Assist with project planning requirements.
  • Forecast manpower and equipment needs for the project.
  • Ensure safety standards are being met and, when possible, exceeded.
  • Lead direct and indirect reports - ensure proper mentoring, training, performance management, and when necessary, discipline is taking place.
  • Work closely with HR to recruit, hire, change, and terminate manpower.


Education/Skills/Qualifications

  • Minimum of 8+ years of Superintendent experience in civil earthworks construction with a focus on industrial projects
  • A journeyman-level trades background is preferred or equivalent non-ticketed experience.
  • Must have industrial experience
  • Extensive knowledge of mass excavation, grading, drainage, and underground.
  • Must have the following tickets: Ground Disturbance Level 2 (GD2), H2S Alive, Leadership for Safety Excellence (LSE), First Aid, WHMIS, CSTS
  • Must be able to read and understand drawings and contracts.
  • Good computer skills required. e.g, Bluebeam, Excel, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar. We are a Google-based company.
  • A demonstrated background in team leadership with a focus on worksite safety.
  • Strong construction knowledge to plan and forecast manpower, equipment, materials and subcontractors.
  • Highly effective client relations, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with various stakeholders.
  • A natural leader and mentor who isn't afraid to get on the tools when needed to train and lead by example.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
  • Must be willing to complete a criminal background check
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada
