The Facilities Manager is responsible for the overall physical operations, maintenance, and upkeep of the Students Union Building (SUB) and other facilities & assets of the University of Alberta Students Union (UASU).
A key function is serving as the primary liaison between the UASU's in-house staff and the University of Alberta's facilities, trades, and projects teams for major infrastructure, complex repairs, and capital projects.
The role manages facilities, maintenance, and custodial staff, day-to-day tenancy affairs, and building improvements, operating in a process-driven and collaborative manner utilizing digital tools.

Key Job Responsibilities:
- Facilities and Building Operations: Overseeing day-to-day operations, managing in-house custodial and maintenance services, preventative maintenance programs, service contracts, inventory, and operational readiness of the vehicle fleet.
- University Liaison and Capital Coordination: Cultivating relationships with University counterparts, coordinating services from the University and outside contractors, and coordinating facility capital projects.
- Tenant Coordination: Serving as a primary contact for commercial tenants in SUB, handling inquiries, service requests, and assisting with lease administration.
- Staff Leadership and Management: Hiring, training, developing, scheduling, supervising, and disciplining staff, while fostering a positive team culture.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensuring staff adherence to policies, developing and enforcing departmental procedures (including health and safety), coordinating inspections, and maintaining compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Financial, Administrative, and Strategy: Maintaining control over operational costs, contributing to strategic vision and annual operating plans, staying aware of industry trends, and providing direct support to the Managing Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum two years of management/supervisory experience and relevant post-secondary education, or an acceptable combination of education and experience
- Experience in general building operations or facility maintenance with a basic understanding of building systems.
- Superior communication, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
- Ability to work responsibly with minimal supervision and manage competing priorities.
- Commitment to high professional and ethical standards and a diverse workplace.
- Proficiency with Google Apps/Microsoft Office, satisfactory Criminal Background Check, and required Intermediate First Aid training.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in project management, change management, lease administration, or relationship management.
- Experience in managing a unionized staff environment.
- Knowledge of accounting and budgeting processes.
- Awareness of the UASU, University of Alberta, or similar organizations.
- Possession of a valid Class 5 or higher drivers licence.
- Possession of a relevant industry or trade certification.
Working Conditions:
Average of 37.5 hours per week, with specific hours including some evenings and weekends as needed. The environment includes time in an office/desk setting and performing operational and physical duties.
