The Municipality of North Cowichan invites applications from candidates with the proven skills, qualifications and abilities for the position of Junior Activity Leader -Programs and Camps on a casual basis. Applicants are required to have the availability to work daytime, evenings, and weekends. Hours of work available will be dependent on community programs, activities or youth outreach opportunities being offered.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the direct supervision, instruction, and leadership of a variety of youth-based camp programs and activities for the Municipality. The work involves delivery, program leadership, and encouraging community participation in activities and programs. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.
This position reports directly to the Recreation Leader and the Recreation Programmer - Community Recreation.
The successful candidate will:
- Establish and maintain positive relations with individuals, community groups and the general public;
- Provide direct instruction and leadership for program offerings;
- Maintain statistics and data and prepare reports;
- Maintain equipment and supplies used for programs and functions;
- Lead the operation and security of programs on assigned shifts;
- Enforce rules and regulations when necessary; and
- Perform other work on an as-needed basis.
Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.
Required Skills, Qualifications, and Abilities:
- Completion of Grade 12. Candidates currently enrolled in or going into Grade 12 may be considered.
- Previous experience working with youth in a recreational leadership capacity is preferred.
- Possession of the following certifications:
- Standard First-Aid and CPR C Certification.
- Possession of the following certifications would be considered an asset:
- BCRPA High-Five Quest 100 - Essential Child Development.
- Fundamental Movement Skills Certification
- Bronze Cross Certification
- Swim Instructor
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License; a satisfactory current driver's abstract will be required.
- Knowledge of the operation of a variety of equipment used in the activities and programs.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other staff, instructors, the general public, user groups, volunteers, organizations and program participants.
- Ability to provide direct leadership and instruction for recreation programs.
- Ability to communicate well verbally, non-verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- The position may be physically demanding; the candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.

Candidates being considered will be required to undergo a comprehensive evaluation of skills, qualifications, and abilities. This position has responsibility for vulnerable persons and will therefore be required to undergo a Vulnerable Sector screening check, in addition to a Police Information Check, if an offer of employment is made.
