Job Details:
McNish Steel is looking for a qualified welder to join our Welding Department. The welding department fabricates welded rebar cages, embedded plates, stud rails and other misc. items for construction projects. This role involves MIG welding, operation of a automatic welding machine, operation of overhead cranes, performing equipment maintenance, and assisting with various shop tasks to ensure efficient production and a safe working environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Welding and Fabrication:
- Perform welding on rebar cages and other components during and post cage machine operation.
- Weld stud-rails as needed.
- Complete all additional welding requirements within McNish Steel's shop.
- Pass CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) weld tests as required.
- Overhead Crane Operation:
- Safely operate overhead cranes to move completed cages within the shop.
- Load rebar bundles, coils, and completed cages onto the appropriate trailers.
- Unload large cages from the welded cage machine, as needed.
- Assist with any other equipment or material movement around the shop using overhead cranes.
- Maintenance of Welding Equipment:
- Conduct preventative maintenance on welding tools and equipment to ensure they are in safe working condition.
- Troubleshoot and rectify issues with welding tools.
- Report any damaged or defective tools and escalate maintenance requirements to the Team Lead.
- Housekeeping and Work Area Organization:
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, free of clutter, garbage, and safety hazards.
- Keep tools organized and accessible at all times.
- Ensure garbage bins and scrap containers in the work area are regularly emptied.
- Supportive Tasks for Cage Fabrication Team:
- Assist with tasks such as threading rebar, operating the hydraulic press, band saw, and rolling rebar rings as required.
- Adherence to Company Policies and Safety Protocols:
- Follow all McNish Steel policies, safety rules, and procedures.
- Take direction from the Team Lead and assist in other areas when requested.
- Prioritize safety for yourself and others, adhering to all safety measures at all times.
Qualifications:
- 1st, 2nd or 3rd year welding apprentice.
- Valid Class 5, 3, or 1 driver's license.
- Experience with GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) and SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding).
- Proficiency in flat, horizontal, and overhead fillet welding.
Skills and Requirements:
- Ability to reliably commute to work.
- Willingness and ability to work overtime when needed.
- Physical fitness to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Prior experience with overhead cranes is an asset.
- Knowledge of semi-automatic welding processes is an advantage.
- Familiarity with skid-steer operation is a plus.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily indoor shop environment, with occasional outdoor work in various weather conditions.
- Fast-paced environment during busy periods.
- Must be prepared for physically demanding tasks and extended hours as needed.
